Kaw 1100 carb tuning

Just rebuilt an 1100 with stock carbs. I'm having a bear of a time getting it tuned. The top set screws have no slots in them- only the little plastic handle. Is there a trick to this? Is there an better and easier carb to but on this ski to adjust?

pull off the plastic handles and you should have metal slotted adjustors.
