About to start working on a 550 with a friend, but i have a few questions first because I don't know much about them. It's an 88 js550 non-reed motor.

What's the easiest way to convert the thumb throttle to a pull trigger?

Are parts from the 550sx reed motor interchangeable with the old js550 motor? (heads and pipe specifically)

What's the best way to put a new steering set-up on it? I would rather have 0 or 4 degree bars rather than the stock ones.

What are the other common cheap mods? I don't want to sink much money into this thing because it's going to be an extra ski..

Thanks

the reed motor parts will not interchange with the pp motor. Just get a billet trigger throttle an put it on, its easy. An you can put 0* bars on the stock turn plate as well. Mods are endless.lol

Best bang for your buck mods:

Pipe

Stainless impeller (either a decent 15 or 15.5 degree straight pitch or the Solas 13/18)

Mill the head to bump the compression up a little.

Quick Steer plate for the steering system.

Extended aftermarket ride plate

As was previously said, bolt on a cheap set up 0* or 4* bars. The reed motors have different cylinder and head stud bolt spacing so they aren't interchangeable.

For the best information check out the PWCTOday forum in the vintage section. This thread has a lot of info, but it seems like a lot of the link don't work any more.
