Hey guys ihave a 1980 js 440 i just bought today and guy i bought it from told me he put a brand new starter in it and it engaged a couple times then would just free spin. I have the starter out and it dose look to be brand new. Anyways i jumped the starter and the gear that grabs the flywheel fly out then drops back down wile spining, it should stay out correct??
Then i hooked the cable back up to the starter in the ski to see what it would do and now im just geting a click sound. Befor i took the starter out when i hit the starter botton it you can hear the starter free spining now im just getimg a click dose anyone know why its doing that? Thank you for any help

the cheap 550 starters are trouble prone.only the oem kawi is recommended.
check your start solenoid and jump directly from battery to starter for testing.check battery and all wiring associated.measure voltage and amp draw if you can
a visual check will not cut it.

Okay so update:So the click was because a ground i fihured that out and i put the starter back in and got it to turn over, but it randomly likes to just free spin and not engage till i tap on it. Guy i got it from says its brand new and he just put it in.
it dose look to be brand new,
is this just a common issue with cheap starters because i dont think its oem.

Yea im going to just order a oem one so i dont have to worry about pulling off the hood in the water and caring some thing with me to hit the damn thing.

oem is the best but pricing is nosebleed territory and NLA.used units are available but ????
and later model 21163-3710 with only one tail bolt and small body are much better than earlier big body 2 bolt versions.
