Jetting fiasco or whats wrong ??

Hi ,

Here is my.......%$#(^@#% I hit a wall

Its a ported 701 ( 61x) protec Cylinder, pro tec head,coffmans exhaust, 650 stator&flywheel, 650 electrical ( they said it would work ??) running on a single 44mm SBN.

>> The facts
I have been out on the lake for the last 2 days and have tried any possible combination on the universe with different needle & seats different jets different springs different carb high/low adjustments and......

Nada, nothing, niet...I am lost ( i could write a book for carb adjustment...O)

The most common recommendations i have received..
120/140-145
2.0/2.3 N&S
65g/95g
Low 1-1.75 trns
High 1.25-2.25 trns

The ski basically runs slightly above idle, no reving up at all, no late reving, no change if I shut the fuel down, nothing, always the same mini idle speed, full throttle, half throttle, minum throttle,feathering...nothing.....

My questions are...

-Could this engine been overported ? Is something like that possible ?
-Could this 44mm carb just be way to small ? Dual carbs ?
-Could it be an electrical problem ? Should I get 701 Stator and electrical box ?
-Should the timing be changed ? Advanced ? How ?
-What can I do to get this engine to run ?

And last but not least, if you know someone with a good drop in 701 Engine....since my patience is slowly nearing its end....I can paypal just need something good & fair price and quick delivery.

Also if you know someone I could send that engine too to get it dialed....but with so many pro's we should get this working

Thank you from RENO

That should work just fine. Could be a fuel issue such as the internal filter is clogged up, or something stuck in the pickup, or a CDI/stator issue where it can't fire quick enough.

Does the sound of the engine change when you open the throttle? The throttle is opening of course, right, like the shaft isn't broken inside?

It's difficult to understand what you are trying to say?
Please feel free to call me at the shop & I'll see what I can offer as help for you.

As Darin stated, Look at the internal fuel filter? It does sound like it might be clogged.

701 ported problems

I have 3 different 44mm SBN, which i prepare with different settings then just swap the carb, faster for me that way...

This means that all 3 internal filters would have to be clogged...which i doubt, pick mabey I will doublechck.

More ideas ???

I could be totally wrong about this, but didnt some guys report something like this happening when their msd enhancers were going bad? I would point the finger at the 650 stuff before pointing it at the engine. I would spray a little fuel down into the carb with the engine running to see if it comes alive for a second maybe. I know this sounds dumb but have you checked to make sure the butterfly valve is opening inside the carb when you pull the throttle lever? maybe something is slipping there (if that's even possible I don't know).... all the ideas I got!

I see you said that you have 3 carbs so forget the carb butterfly, but maybe its your cable? I would still make sure you are getting air and fuel into the engine... then maybe timing I guess?

Look and see if your carb body has the return restrictor built in or just tap the return line with a splitter and a .60 main jet.

The Good Old Days
Just a wild stab in the dark but are you still using the fuel on/off selector ?

Does the motor rev up if you dump a bit of fuel directly into the carb ?

The return line restrictor is in the carb body behind the fuel pump block and right in the hole going to the fuel return nipple at the top.

Sometimes they are drilled out and you will have to use an inline restrictor.

The restrictors can be made from an aluminum or brass straight inline 1/4" barb fitting, tapped with a 5X0.8mm threads on one end for a .60 main jet or you can but the at Riva for around 15 bucks.

kind of a shot in the dark, but did you do a compression test? back when we didnt know poop fx69 ported his kawi 750 cylinder and knocked the compression down too far and it never would rev up after that- that was before we knew what we were doing- we ragged his azz about it for a long time- if we would have bumped the compression back up it may have been a running mofo- this is if your cylinder and head arent a matched combo- if they are never mind i dont really know what im rambling about anyways- bored at work- good luck

701 I think I know....sigh

The compression shows 110/110...
Which I never checked to begin with because I bought the engine with as i was told 150/150...

Is that the solution to my problem....is this like way to low, like way way >???

What can I do to raise it up to where it should be....180/180 ??

Thank you !

Chris

615 Freeriders are addicted to T1 madness.
My guess w/o reading any of the other responses is stator is bad OHMS test the charge coil it should be like 365 I believe, the p/u should be like 14/15 ohms. Check brown and white wire in ebox for charge coil and red and white for p/u coil. Wiggle wires all the way to stator cover while checking to check for breaks in wire to. Also check your coil wires.

What is the condition of your reed valves. Did you load your motor with water then try to start it. This could break your reed valves and make it run like sXXX. I don't think this is your problem but after reading the whole thing I thought I would throw it out. You have some very good advise here. Let us know what you find out.

701

Engine was never started with flush kit !

I posted that I assume the problem is my compression 110/110 way too low ???

Looks like a top end rebuilt to me.

110 is pretty low- too low if you ask me- i dont know if this is your ONLY problem, but i would get it up to at least 150 or more if looking for more performance- do you have someone you can borrow some domes or a head from i would give that a rip first before spending any more $$$

701 final

The engine is apart....

110/110 to low even with porting...,pistons and rings worn ..I was shocked to see..

Sent out for bore/hone and new pistons...

Head might have had wrong domes too I sent it along.....

Sigh....the rebuilt is coming up as soon as I get the parts back.

Thank you everyone again for time and help I will post a final hopefully with an excellent runni ski.
