I just replaced my pump and midshaft, while trying to shim the back of the pump i put bt an 8th'' or a little more of shims and the drive shaft is still not in the center of the hole. Is that much shimming normal? it just seems a bit excessive

no numbers anywhere near the bolts that i can see, I tightened the front bolts and the rear bolts were sitting 1/8'' off of the hull with nothing shimming it, with the shims i have in it now (motor shims) it brought the shaft up a bit so it is not on touching anything but it is not centered

Maybe the shaft is a little out of true. You would have to put it on V blocks with a dial indicator to check the runout. I have bent mine while removing a stubborn prop. It can be straightened without too much trouble. I would just shim the back with a big enough shim to take up the gap and make sure the shaft was straight and then shim the engine to align the couplers if necessary.

i just had the same issue. i had to put 1/8 to 3/16 in there. the shaft is dead strait. but i would imagine the poor alignment from the previous owner is what destroyed the drive shaft and coupler shaft.

the shaft appears to be straight, there is no loping motion when it spins so i am pretty sure it is fine. my previous midshaft was not straight and i think thats what made my splines go. i guess ill just leave it alone, the shaft isnt touching the hole in the hull at least
