Brace urselves boys, this could get knee-deep in noob poop, but here goes.

Where does the stator/pickup go in relation to TDC on the initial install for a TL. i've got an old, analog TL, so i don't have the indicator light to help figure out static timing. I found TDC and marked the cases/flywheel relationship. Do I just mark of in degrees how much advance i want (suggestions welcome here:dunce:) and then rotate the stator so the pickup is in the middle of that degree measurement? From reading other posts and lots of frustrations it sounds like 18-26 degrees of advance is o.k. I'm running a stock 701 61X, limited B-pipe, single 44 mikuni, 35cc domes, pump gas.

Do I just assume the things gonna fire correctly enough to run from the jump and then alter the timing with a timing light? Matt E said skip the light and just ground a plug against the engine and determine timing when i see the spark. How in the he** do I determine the timing by doing that or even if i am using a timing light? So the light flashes or the spark hits, but how do i know/see/or mark when the signal happens? Then, what do i do with that info?

All MSD TL's have the indicator light. Even the old analog boxes.
I didn't say to just skip the light. I had to, because my LED was burnt out.
Find TDC. Mark it on the flywheel and on the cases, to line up.
Then find where the plug(s) is/are firing. Find the angle with the marks on the flywheel.

Matt, I wasn't banging on u. I was using what u told me and trying to get a reference. Sorry if i came off like a whiner. No worries brother.

How do u eyeball and mark the spark while the engine is running? is the flywheel spinning slow enough to see this accurately?

I think you misunderstood me as being mad. :) I am not.

You time it non-running.
Simply rotate the flywheel until you get spark.

didn't know if that kind of stuff gets under ur skin or not, but much obliged man. i'd like to think i can stumble through this TL setup. i appreciate the info. so say i get the static timing figured out. is static timing considered my "zero" point to advance timing from or do i measure my timing advance from TDC?

what is the relationship of static to dynamic timing? if i advance static is it just understood that dynamic timing is advanced? does setting one just obviate changing the other?

Your static timing is the maximum advance the motor is going to run.
The TL will retard from the static advance. So, dynamic timing is retarded.
