How much $ for glass work?

How much do you think the average shop would charge to do all this to a ski?

take ski completly apart
Reinforce sides of hull (no carbon just glass)
completly refoam
reinforce tray
install footholds
reinforce handpole mounting area
repair other minor glass dings, cracks (minor..nothing major)
paint hull hood and pole (solid color..nothing fancy)
then turf
reassemble entire ski

I might be doing all this for someones ski, and not sure what to charge. Im not lookin for an exact quote, just a ballpark range.
Thanks!

It runs pricey, thats why most do it themselves.

If it was a friend that I ride with and we're tight, I wouldnt charge anything, assuming that it goes both ways, but he would have to be helping the whole time, and supplying drinks

If it was an aquintance (someone I didnt really know), then I would probably charge mabye the breakdown as follows (assuming an amatuer paint gun and single stage is used)

ski teardown- $50 (for removing EVERYTHING in prep for paint) (as a reference, some private guys charge $200-$400 just to pull the engine and put another in, but hey, I've done it a few times, so its no big deal for me)
reinforcing would go as follows:
sides $100
handle-pole area $40
tray (just on top?) $10
prep work for it all $40
Defoam and refoam- $60 (lil cheaper since foothold holes make it easier)
foothold install (depends on type, how hard they are to do, ex. WCF are easy) $50 average
minor stuff (marintex crap) $30
paint $50
turf (depends on experience)-$50
re-assembly- $50

so about $530 in labor, he'd pay for parts. Some of those prices may be high, but Im guessing some are low as well. Being as some things I havent done (paint) I would probably charge $500-$600 for labor and for someone I really didnt know, a business aquitance it would definitely be $600. If you've done all of this before, mabye $700.

But then again, I probably wouldnt charge all that much at all, mabye nothing, if the person would ride with me!

This is my opinion, Im sure others varies, Im not sure what a freestyle shop would charge, but I KNOW a dealer would charge probably twice that at least, but then again, most are bitches, barring some.

I agree meatball but, when it comes to paint it depends on what brand and color. I had a friend who owned a body shop paint an old ski and cost of matierials (paint and primer) was almost $75.00. In the end its like meatball said it depends on how well you know the person.

Id say way more than 700. Paint itself with the right prep and work put into it would be 700+ alone. Factor in the price for 'glassing supplies, the prep and labor that goes into re enfrocing, and the PITA of re-foaming...
I would think youd be somewhere around 1500 if you got the hook up with paint...
Thats just going by the average cost of paint, I know my paint job including prep was 800, and that was considered cheap...

I forgot to add in paint prep work. But most of my friends I wouldnt/couldnt charge at all (if they supplied all parts and mabye a bribe like some scratch-offs  ), hell if they'll ride with me and are willing to learn I'll help em! And I dont consider the neighbor who I wave to every morning, a friend, because hes asked me numerous times to fix his ski with no compensation the other way whatsoever, and it gets quite annoying him asking for a few hours labor and I dont even really know him at all.

I dont really deal with people I know but dont really know, in business deals in any way shape or form (ex selling a ski). Because if I were to sell a ski to say a friend of a friend, and they break it, then I feel guilty, etc. Business is business and friendship shouldnt mix. BTW, the $700 was an estimate for labor ONLY. Sanding work for prep I might add 150-200ish. Some considerably private jetski mechanics I know (still have a business name) would charge 1500 without paint prep or shooting.

I didnt include materials in any of those estimates. I would probably come down on the side reinforcing estimate and come up on assembly, dissembly, etc. BTW, beer is usually the form of payment between friends. I know sometimes we all need some money, but friends are not a source to earn it from IMO.

O, and I consider a friend I would do this with someone whos had my back a few times, and I hang out with at least once a week. BTW, you cant pay me in beer Im underage. :cool2:

Also, having no one to ride with, is a really big influencing factor in me not having a problem with helping build someones ski with them. I've offered, but none of my friends will nut up to the pricetag (of a ski). Im sure in Jersey you got plenty of people to ride with there, here I've seen one other standup rider within 3 YEARS, and it was an SXR 800, and I couldnt catch him to say hi. My usual riding buddy rides an FX-140, the nearest standup freestyle guy really into skis is about 2 hours away, and I know theres a few guys in the surf in OC, but Im not sure where to go out there and what the rules are/good spots etc. Usually I have to ride alone, but Im in front my house and stay within swimming distance (sucks when the jellyfish come in!!). I've never had the opportunity of riding with another standup rider, so I could be considered a little desperate for a riding buddy!

Cool thanks for the replys. And if I were doing this for a friend, id do it for free as well along with his help, and have done tons of my friends skis already.

But this isnt wouldnt be for a friend, its for a business, who will just go to fiberglass shop and get raped, unless I do it for them.

I would imagine if a fiberglass shop were to do all this it would cost about a couple grand, right?

If your going to do it a a shop job. Then tell them that you charge $25 or what ever an hour and write down exactally how many hours you have in it.. But let them know up front that it could be upward of 2000 or maybe 2500 you don't really know exactally but you won't rip them off you just want your exact hours out of it...

This is what I usually do for jobs that I have no idea what it would cost and the people usually say something to the effect of well your $25 an hour beats the marina's $80 so they don't hesitate. Either way good luck and don't under price it that makes you really mad

usually people who get involved enough to that point do the work themselves or buy a ski done up like that or in rare cases buy a wamiltons or malones setup for $$$$

im guessing if you had that done at a shop the glass work + disambly alone would prob be around 1500. One of my moms friends had someone run her sitdown into a dock and crack the front lip shop she took it too wanted like 500 to fix and re paint the area. Instead i did it for like 100 plus glass and resin. My advice would be to call a reputable shop and ask then what they would charge for laborto do what you want to and half it then tell them they need to pay for materials on top

Another nice tip... Well it worked for me since I am too slow to actually watch the clock or keep up with paperwork... I put a large piece of masking tape on the ski and my old watch then I write the day, time started and time I stop it is much easier than trying to keep track of that paper all the time.. expecially when you are looking at weeks worth of work

anything less than $1000 and youll be wasting your time. Tell them you'll work on it for $xx amount of dollars per hour like speedfreak said, and tell them you wont know the final price til its done, but it will be 1/3 the price of any shop doing it. Thats a TON of work and a TON of money. charging $1000 all said and done minimum is a steal for whoever owns the ski.
