Hopefully you can read this. But it sounds like you are not slipping the center spacer over and beating the opposite side brg out. Sometimes there is a bunch of crap inside the tube and it wont move much. If so flush it out as best possible to get the beater bar inbehind the opposite sides brg.
1. Pry the oil seals out of the axle housing with a
wide-blade screwdriver as shown in Figure 55. Pad
the screwdriver to prevent it from damaging the axle
housing bore.
2. Insert a drift into one side of the axle housing.
3. Push the center spacer over to one side and place
the drift on the inner race of the opposite bearing.
4. Tap the bearing out of the hub with a hammer,
working around the perimeter of the bearing's inner
race to prevent the bearing from binding in the
housing bore.
5. Remove the bearing and the center spacer.
6. Tap out the opposite bearing with a suitable
driver inserted through the axle housing.
I don't understand those directions. Those directions sound like what you do to remove the bearings after you have the axel out. We cannot get the axel out. I don't understand how you can remove a bearing from the inside w/o removing the axel 1st.
Here's what's been done... We followed the clymer's book step by step...
- remove the nut
- remove spindel
- remove sprocket and etc
- put spindle and nut back on
~~~~ use a piece of pipe and a hammer to push the axel through (This is where we are stuck. The bike is on it's side, the swing arm is supported with the axel dangling, a large man is stanging on a chair hitting the axel with a 6lb sledge. The axel does not budge)
If the axel came out, we could work out the bearings, but you can't push the bearings out if you can't get on the inside. We've removed the seals. We've filled it with penitrating lub and it will come out the other side. The only other thing we can think of is to cut the bearings in half, get the axel out and then we can push one bearing at a time out from the inside.
