stop by a dive shop and try on different hoods...some leave the face wide open but cover the ears and velcro strap under the chin...great to have in the cold wind...

ahh dive hoods arnt really what you want..they are really thick and uncomfortable...a nice surf hood works well....i ahve a 2mm one thats attached to a 1mm tank top and it works great..cant wear it under a helmet though

I bought a 2mm hood like described above at a sidewalk diveshop sale....maybe because it's here in warm Florida....

I've got a nice thick steamer and integral hood but I don't like the built in hood. For freestyle, if you go in face first, which you often do, you get a blast of icy water in through the hood and straight down your back, and some times if the entry is hard, it can rip the hood back off your head altogether.
I would recommend a normal steamer and a separate balaclava hood.

I bought a dive hood 2 years ago and used it twice. It gets too hot, even on a 40 deg morning. I also don't like my eares sealed off like that, messes with my equilibrium.
