Is it common for a 650 motor to blow head gaskets. It has only happened to me once but i was just wondering.

did you have a cooling problem?
was gasket properly installed?
head/deck flat and undamaged?

Thick fiber gaskets crush over time, check the head bolts every season and especially after the first ride on a new one.

Use OEM Yamaha headgasket only... not aftermarket, make sure surfaces are flat, and re-torque after 1st tank, torque the headbolts no less than 23 Ft-Lbs.
