Fuel load in the surf.

Does the amount of fuel you guy's have in the tank affect your riding in the surf? It seems to have a great influence on my boats if I am running a full load, or perhaps down to just a couple of gallons, I really notice the change.

There isn't all that much diff on my SJ. I have mine setup for bottom/mid and the added bottom end kick makes up for the added fuel. However, in choppy conditions with less than 3 gallons I can airate the gas lines if ridding at WOT.

In flatwater, I can feel a difference in how I can throw it around. Runs best with 1/2 tank!

Exactly how I feel, I like the full load to eliminate airating the fuel, but 1/2 or less for the feel of the boat. I always run on reserve to minimize the fuel problem. I can't tell you how many times I thought I had an engine issue, when it was just air in the fuel.

2 gallons fuel = 16 pounds
5 gallons fuel = 40 pounds

thats water @ about 8 lbs per gallon.

fuel is roughly 6 lbs per gallon depending on temperture and elevation.

same theory though.

I don't like more than 2/3 tank, any more and you can stuff the nose too easily while on a face. That's where Tubbies would help dramatically I imagine.

Definately agree. I feel a pretty big difference when I have a full tank versus an almost empty one. Re-entries seem to be easier with a full tank.
I have thought about trying a smaller tank, perhaps from a 550 to help with the airing issue and lower center of gravity. Re-fueling more often for freerides won't bother me.

crab,

You may want to look into this for your fuel system:

I haven't personally tried it but in theory, it works (with 1 negative effect).

I don't get it, re-entries requires "technique" and if a full tank of gas changes the center balance, just adjust your technique. Sure Tubbies will make things easier, but a simple shift in body position will too (on re-entries). I don't run Tubbies mostly because I don't see whats so tuff about adjusting ones technique to the current conditions...It will make you a more rounded rider (instead of relying on help aides).

I would still love to try some out tho ;)

isn't the only negatiive affect, when you run out of gas you ARE COMPLETLY OUT of gas ??

Yes (but more to this). With one of these installed on a surf/freestyle standup, there are many times when the hull is completely sideways, causing a big air burp into the feed line possibly killing the motor when you need it the most (like after landing sideways from a jump and needing to get away before the next swell eats you up). Basically this "Air-Fuel Separator" kit is kinda like converting to a fuel bowl style carburator (or a stiffening capacitor in a stereo system).

On a sitdown this negative effect would be extremely rare but I often have my SJ 90 degrees to the water.

I still plan on trying one of these kits.
