Ok so I’ve been meaning to write a review on my FP1 for awhile now but since almost all New Zealand’s boilermaker/welders have moved to Australia I’ve been run off my feet working way to many hours.
I have however had most Sundays off to get out on my ski and abuse it because that’s what we all Love to do. I did a build tread on this onDalusionfwx.co.nz for anyone who might be interested.(new zealands ski site)
After a couple of years of hammering my 06 SJ and loving most things about it I knew it was time to step up. Pretty hard making a call on which hull to get these days with all the options out there and more coming along every month it seems (although some just show up in photos for like ayear and never get out in the water but that’s another story).
I was going to go down the FR2 road just because I think they look good and have been around ages then thought about a lightweight afterlooking at my damaged 06 and reading a review from Zack Bright about the quality. I emailed Germany and didn’t get much help from them (don’t think they take us kiwis seriously lol) which was a disappointment.
NZs still a bit short on AM hulls but I did manage to test a FR2 and Taynes JB1 although I only spent a very short time on the JB1 in very average conditions.
I liked the change from an SJ especially the rocker that’sthe best addition to any aftermarket hull in my opinion. I was able to feel comfortable enough on both these skis straight away to barrel roll them but as both owners at that stage hadn’t flipped them I didn’t want to take the flip cherry/smash them up.
My preference/focus in the surf is make the most of the waves and not just ride around in the foot holds looking for a nice lip to hit although I do love that as well it’s just not the main objective for me.
When a ski is setup how the rider likes it most experienced riders will adapt fast and use what they are on well. I felt that a hull that sits a little deeper in the water like a SJ was going to suit me best.
I took a gamble on the FP1, I did watch all the vids and speak to Pete but the proofs always in the ride and am happy with my decision.
I went with the super heavy duty surf layup in full black because I want to spend time riding not fixing my skis after all the hullbreakages/reinforcements on my sj.
These things turn hard and I probably have to fast a throwstill but man it carves bottom turns like no other and I don’t think I wills low it down just yet. They slide very well when asked as well not sure how because the chines are deep but hay whatever works I guess.
Flip rotation feels more controlled which is also helped bya bigger hp motor that I don’t hold wide open like I used to and just hang on hoping for the best.
Rentrys are awesome and these things make them a dream witha strong turn and rocker.
I feel very confident on stabs/rolls off all sized waves butmy riding bud Tofa reakons I was straighter on the sj with my rolls. Time and videos will tell all here I think. Build Quality is very hard to fault.
The underside is holding up well the me “monster trucking”over the shells on the beach aswell. I don’t think I will let this hull wear a flat spot like I did my sj. A good jelcoat makes pulling the ski back to thewater so much easier.
All the rocker hulls I have ridden splash water in your faceat some point when I get around to fitting the small splash guard Pete has madeI will update that but as all the FR2/JB1 owners know its worth the trade off.
As a final note I let my mate who is new to skis have a ride while I got on his stock pre 08 sj. I sucked on his ski and he went better!.
Think about what you want from a hull then test some out........or just roll the dice
