Foaming Q...

I've read the foaming threads, searched, and couldn't find these answers.

Will new foam adhese to old foam? Can't see why it won't, as long as the old foam isn't wet...

Do people partially refoam the ski? I'd like to change the foam in a couple areas, but do not want to hack into the tray. As much as I can reach through the footholds and sides of the tray (will cut those) is fine with me.

Basically I want to cut the sides of my SN tray for a project I don't want to fully refoam the ski as I don't plan on keeping it past 07'.

Any opinions?

Nothing wrong with foaming on top of old foam as long as its dry and clean (no mold etc blah blah). I dont see why you would need or want to partially refoam, unless you are reinforcing in the back and dont 'need' to rip out the foam under the try, and only need to do the stuff in the sides, or are installing holds and dual scuppers, etc.

Well if the foam inside where I cut is dry, I'll leave it. If its not, I'll be getting out as much as I can. If its soaked, it will have to be refoamed.

Cool. That was the answer I needed.

I forgot!
they tend to leak around all the thru hull fittings and if that part is soaked it may not dry up unless you cut the front of the tray open, if your doing that much, you might as well take the foam out and seal all the fittings with 3m 5200 sealer. you do have 8 weeks until ride season opens. composites canada has all the foam and epoxy resins you can imagine, i was there a couple weeks ago. one thing to think about is it seems that the foam doesn't expand really well with the temperatures/moisture this time on year so you may use a bit more 2 part foam to fill your ski which adds more weight.

8 weeks until ride season? Wow, you guys are pretty hardcore. Im interested to know if my foam is wet or not. The boat sat 2 years prior to riding it all last year.

I'm going to have to see, may as well just do it.

Planning to bring the ski home in a couple weeks and start sanding.

I have a quick foam question too. I got my holes cut for my footholds, the void is probably only .5"-1" bigger than the actual hold itself. I drilled a 1" hold in the top rail above each hold, but it doesnt seem like the foam will flow around to everywhere. How well does it flow after mixing? Im sure its pretty critical for the structure of the hold if its completely surrounded by foam so am I supposed to cut channels for the foam to flow into the furthest area of the hold or will it force its way in there?

if you are using the 2 part foam, it is in liquid form when you pour it in, so it is going to go to the bottom...... if the Can Foam, just push the nozzle all the way down.

It should , especially this time of the year when the temps are lower.
I have actually had foam start expanding in the mixing cup before.

I have also heard of that happening thats what I was afraid of. I didnt want it to fill up the hole I drilled before even getting to the hold.

I drilled a hole above my foot hold, and one about a foot in front of the that. Tilted the ski up a little, and filled the hole above the foothold first until it was blocked off with foam. Then I poured foam through the other hole until it was full. I completely refoamed my ski though.

When I was using the 2 part foam in the summer, it was starting to go from the brown to white in the cup... I would dump it in as quick as I could... I also put my finger over the holes to not let all of it spew out.. and make the foam force itself down and around the hold... made a lot of cracking sounds....

Yeah, I thought I was being smart to cover the hole so the foam would be forced to fill all the voids. The s-ht built up so much pressure it distorted the foot hold. I had to take a grinder to it, re shape and re-glass.. lesson learned.

I let out a little pressure here and there... But I wanted to try to force as much of it down as I could... but yes, I can see how a blowout could have EASILY happend!
