Fiberglass type/quantity for foothold and all reinforcing

I want to reinforce my ski in all the right places as well as put in my WCF footholds.

From what I read - the silica filler+epoxy is what I want to fill in the bond line as well as adhere the footholds to the ski.... right?

Also, I would like some advice on what quantity and type of fiberglass to get to do both the footholds and all the reinforcing on my entire ski. I was told to use 1208 biaxial on the tray, but that's all I know so far....

Thank you. -Eric

I used 1208 for the whole ski when i reinforced my SJ, I used about 3yds of 60inch wide cloth. If I was going to order some then I would order extra just incase it is needed.

Cool thanks. Anyone second that quantity? 1208 seems like it would be really good for all the glass for the footholds and all other reinforcing.

Do you guys just cut strips of fiberglass like 2-3 inches to glass around the footholds? You just cut the glass with regular scissors?

I have done a lot of reading so far... there was 2 methods laying it dry or wetting the surface first....which do you guys do? I think it said that laying it down dry was the preferred method normally, but figured I'd ask.

Is 2 layers of 1208 biaxial good enough for reinforcement?

Thanks

yes, 2" wide and i've used sharp sissors before.

i wet the surface first...

That will be strong enough for 30+ ft backys! :Banane09: Anything more, and you are wasting $ in material, and just adding extra weight.

OK great. Thanks guys....

I will read that thread today. Do most people use epoxy + filler to fill in the bond line to make a flat surface to glass over? What kind of filler do I want? Silica filler?

When you're glassing do you use rollers to apply the epoxy to the surface? Or do you guys just use the squeegie thing to spread it around.

Thanks. -Eric

when i did mine last winter i did this:

-roughed the sides with 60 grit and cleaned
-filled bond line with epoxy mixed with 410 filler
-1 layer 8.5 oz biaxiale - 4" wide strip over the bond line
-1 layer 8.5 oz biaxiale - 8" wide strip over that
-1 layer 12.5 oz texalium - full side - bottom to hood lip

all three layers extend from nose to bulkhead and i did all three at the same time along with the bond line filler as to get the best mechanical bond between the 3 layers and the hull.

squeegied out as much extra epoxy as i could as well.

1) I was gonna order a few yards of the 1708 biaxial. Should I get a little bit of the glass tape they sell too? It's 8.7oz Fiberglass Cloth Tape (E-Glass). I was gonna get like 10 yards of 3" tape to do right under the hood seal area and any other areas that could use a little extra reinforcing. Or should I just cut 3" strips out of the 1708 biaxial and use that?

2) They sell a lot of different rollers... would anyone work really good for what we do? I was gonna get the 1/2" dia. 3" wide roller, but they have many sizes and shapes available.... I see there are ones that are eggshaped and ones for corners too... recommendations?

3) How much of the aerosil/cabosil filler and Phenolic Microballoons should I buy? I am gonna do a 50/50 mix of it as a filler. They a few different quantities... I think the quantities go 1 qt, 2.5qt, 5 qt, 4 gallon. The weights for each are different as they are different materials. I am using as a filler for adhearing the footholds, filling the bondline, and filling under the pole.

4) do you guys recommend doing any reinforcement on the back wall that the cdi box mounts to?

would you guys consider the 18OZ biaxial to be really strong?

From what I have read as long as you do the epoxy right - the 17-19oz biaxial is VERY stong.....

Can any veteran glass guys help answer these questions for me before I order? Going to order all my supplies as soon as I get some help with these last 4 questions. Thanks.

1. I would not bother with the tape stuff. You will have plenty of extra cloth if you order 2-3 yards of just the biaxial, just cut your own tape.

2. I use foam rollers to apply all my glass work, it makes it the most uniform and soaks up extra resin. I think I use something that is 1" X 6". These will work perfect if that is what you're referring to, http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=84066-1077-07140C&lpage=none

3. I have never used that stuff, instead I just bought a small kit of the 8 lb. density foam and it worked great for the bond line, hood lip and pole area.

4. No need to reinforce that area IMO. Mine lasted all year without any reinforcement and it went through one heck of a pounding.

Hope this helps ya.

i used the West Systems 410 Microlight. the stuff is really light so you don't realize that 5 oz is a faily large amount. once you mix up your epoxy/hardener you can add the 410 to it... keep mixing more in until you get it to you desired consistancy. you can mix it all the way up to a nice peanut butter consistancy if you want to. I would recommend using a slower hardener at first to give you more pot life and time to figure out your consistancy, until you see what you a dealing with...
