I was just wondering if someone could explain to me exactly what the adjustment screew is adjusting on a factory pipe?

It is adjusting the amount of water that is injected into the head pipe. This intern effects the sonic wave created in the pipe.

When you say injected into the head pipe, do you mean the cooling jacket or into the exhaust itself?

Into the exhaust. There are tiny holes the adjusting screws act as needle valves adjusting the amount of flow through the holes.

if your headpipe is not attached you should hook it up to a hose and check it out, I have noticed that adjuster screws do not all spray identical with same turns open, and even had one of the holes ( tiny hole ) clogged !!

Common problem with these headpipes. I run a wire through mine at least once a year or if I feel a performance difference.
