Exploding 2 part Foam

Well I went to foam my footholds tonight because I just got my order from us composites and I want to have them foamed and glassed in so I can finish turfing this weekend. It’s around 60 here and US composites website says to place the containers in warm water to get them to ATLEAST 80 degrees to get full expansion. So I put them in warm water and let them sit a while to warm up. I go to mix the foam, I open part A and poor 4oz. I open part “B†and the top blows off hits the ceiling and all of part “B†comes out like a fountain. It looked like when people put mentos in a 2 liter of soda. The stuff spewed at least 2 feet high. So if you have to warm up 2 part foam DO NOT warm up part “Bâ€.

I just poured what had settled in the container. 3oz of the part b left thats including what I scraped off the table and the side of my ski. What a CF.

You can normally safely heat the B side to 120+ without any consequences. It helps the viscosity for pouring and also speeds up the reactivity when the two are combined. I don't know why that would have happened. I'd give them a call. I have 100 gallon tanks of almost the exact same foam at work and they are kept at 100+ degrees and at a pretty high pressure. How hot was your water? Is it possible that water got inside the container?

I left them in the bag they came in when I put them in the water so no water would get to the stuff. I measured the water with cooking thermometer and it was no where close to 120. Before I warmed it up Part "B" felt really full. I sent them an email telling them what happened hopefully they will hook me up. thanx for the info gdfl

Speak up ,don't kiss azz
I had a similar problem with the Blowsion kit .:haha:
It said to mix and shake for 30 seconds before pouring so I mixed 4oz of each and shook it and the top came explodiong of my applicator bottle within 5 seconds and the stuff was at room temp (about 65 ).

I had to run the 10 ft to my ski and try to get whatever I could in the holes but it wasnt much at that point .

Now I just mix and 2 quick shakes and pour and it works mint

dont heat up the foam before you mix it... pour it in and then shine a heat gun on it, just make sure you wear rubber gloves, it will stick to you until you shed new skin and regrow your fingernails, trust me....
it overflowed on a refoam job i did and i just picked it up and put it in the trash, thought it would wash off... nope!

brraap....thats so 2002
thats wild stuff.....i had some of it not harden the other day, went to it the next day and it was still spongy, i cut it out and will repour some, but doea anyone know why it would do that?

You've gotta mix the $hit out of that stuff to get a full reaction. It makes a difference whether you're using a corded or cordless drill, etc. Since the blowing agent is actually water (the heat of the chemical reaction causes steam that causes the liquid to foam up), humidity and ambient temp affect things as well as if you let a lot of air into the cans while sitting on your shelf. The soft foam thing sounds like you possibly didn't mix well enough or maybe your A side needed shaking before you poured. I'm not an expert....those are just guesses.

while you are all on the subject of foam, you should ask the "almighty" mark44 what a heat gun does to spray foam :angryfire: :notworthy: :newangel:

I just called up uscomposites to order another batch. I told them what happened and they hooked me up. The guy I talked to said that the part b is where the gas thats released is stored and that you should remove the tops before you warm it up because it holds pressure at room temp and heating it just makes it worse. He said to have the tops loose when you warm them up to vent the extra gasses that are released. I guess thats sort of a no brainer not to heat a closed container.

I'm glad they took care of you. :Banane01:
