Other Engine parts cleaning?

Location

SpecIfically a crank. Got a good crank I want to use that got dirt, rust, etc on it from tearing the motor down.

I don't have a parts cleaner so I have rinse it another way. Can I just use water and oil down afterwards or something else besides water better like break clean, gum cutter, carb spray?

Thanks,

WD-40 works as a good cleaner and on rust. I also use mineral spirits (paint thinner) to do a lot of cleaning on greasy parts. Also compressed air from a compressor if you have one to blow all the liquid cleaner out of the bearings. Just oil everything down afterwards.

Why not just use premix? Gasoline is an excellent cleaner/degreaser and the added oil will help keep it lubricated.

Way better than water and a lot cheaper and safer than carb cleaner.
