Engine options

What do you guys suggest for a surf ski engine. Buying a complete engine from someone like LPW, Teamscream, or Group K or buying a stock 701 and bigboring and porting?

I can do all assembly and tuning.........I am mostly wondering from a cost standpoint. What is a new 701 going for, and where can you find them? If you then add porting and a bigbore to this, how far off is if from a complete engine from one of these guys?

Anyone have any personal experience with this?

I would jus go for a 701 with b pipe and msd, more than enopugh power in a freeride ski.. I would only get a motor built for a flatwater boat, just my .02c

I will be able to let you know what I think of my little Team Scream 701 in a few weeks. I pulled my motor apart and sent it to them. For a surf boat I really didn't feel the need to go much farther than some good porting, B pipe, msd, light weight flywheel, etc.
I still ride a lot of flatwater, but am not going to be competing or anything.

Where do you ride the most? If in surf, then just have your 701 ported with a nice rec port job. Any of those listed would be good. In surf you want reliability. Plus you do not need all that power. For Flat water, actually, just get it ported.

Thinking still running about 350.00-400.00 from most builders. Just need to check.
TLR did my first portjob back in 2003 for 325-350.00 Ran it until last year when the crank let go.

Tell me about it.
I decided a while back that I want reliability no matter where I ride.

Surf - Mild 701 with standard bolt ons, spend money on handling (steering, tubbies, straps, etc) and spend money on keeping water out (ebox, hood sealing/new hood, reinforcement on hull/tray)

Flatwater - NorcalEX's motor for $2600, STD stroke Lamey. No better deal out there.

Building an OEM motor can be very expensive if you have a shop do all the work. Well worth it IMO because I don't know 2% of what an engine builder does. But for me to drop over $5K on an OEM stroker motor would be a tough call.

Buying a motor that is built is always cheaper, problem is that you arn't 100% sure what kind of shape motor you are getting.

There has been so much nice stuff selling on here lately I would just snag up an already built motor. Yeah, you have to take a chance and that sucks but I would like to think a majority of the time you would get exactly or close to what is described. I was going to build a motor from parts for my FX1 and have my superjet motor ported, I ended up getting a ported and resleaved big bore motor with a 0 hour topend, complete short block for only a couple hundred bucks more than what it was going to cost me to build one motor and port the other PLUS I now have more power in both skis and a super reliable stock, low hour 2006 engine in my FX1 girlfriends ski which means less busted knuckles on a ski I dont ride.

I'm just your typical gear head that always wants more, whether I need it or not. I have a ported (Group K) 83mm 701 cylinder I can try, and want to test some carb and reed stuff too. The boat actually runs pretty good, but hits REALLY hard just off idle, almost to the point I cant hold on to it. I want to keep this power, but have it more linear, or controllable. Didnt know if any of the porting or bigbore stuff would be more "rideable". Its a real PITA for flatwater riding because it wont cruise and its hard to control it when trying to set up for a trick, but its awesome in the surf! I want my to have my cake and eat it too!

Anyones porting any better than anyone elses, or is there someone to stay away from?

Would a 780 (85.5-86mm)CC bore hit much harder than a 736? (83mm)

As I test some of these things I'll keep updating................

Talking to the guy I bought my engine from he said it had a much flatter powerband than a 701 or X cylinder in general. Not as snappy, but a strong broad powerband. It is a big bored, ported 62T.

for your fat ass id put a 1000000 cc in that mug then ud be up to speed:smashfreakB::smashfreakB::smashfreakB::smashfreakB::smashfreakB::smashfreakB::smashfreakB::smashfreakB::smashfreakB::smashfreakB::smashfreakB::smashfreakB::439::439::439::439::439::439::439::439::439::439::439::439::439::booty::booty::booty::booty::booty::booty::booty::booty::booty::booty:

Phil... porting is a waste of money for surf,Mark and Brians boats are pretty much the same setup, one with a port job one with out and you cant tell the diff at all, Some big bore set ups feel a little bit stronger, but mostly a waste of $ for surf. I would think a rework on the full specs for a little more linear hit would be the best $ spent

Torr,

Full specs are not made for a linear hit...........they are made to be super clean and hit hard. Ed himself told me I would never have that "electric motor" feeling of the stock carbs. I may add some power and go back to stock 38s, or a single 48 to see if it will "soften" the hit a little. Just wanna try some stuff and see what I like best................Picked up a ported 83 mm cyl for 200.00 so its worth a try, if nothing else I'll put it on the blaster..:)
