Disconnecting stop button

The stop button on my SJ has developed an intermittent short. I was planning on just disconnecting the white wire going into the button but I want to make sure I can do this without affecting the kill switch.

No, The white is the kill circuit when grounded to activate the relay in the CDI.
Pushing the red stop button and/or disconnecting the lanyard is the same thing, the switch grounds the white and completes the circuit to ground. (black wire)

The only way to do it is to disconnect the black plug at the ebox. It will disable your stop switch and the lanyard.

So even if I disconnect the wire at the stop button itself, it still disables the lanyard switch? I assumed the two switches were connected in parallel since either one will ground the circuit.

There is only the white wire and the ground going into the stop button, so wouldn't having the white wire disconnected at that point be the same as not having the button depressed? I'm leaving the white wire going from the e-box to the lanyard switch intact.

I forgot!
the lanyard does two things. it enables the start switch when plugged in and grounds the white wire to kill spark/disable start button when the tether is pulled. the red button will also ground the white wire killing the spark as chuckie mentioned. so yeah why not spend 12.32 minutes cleaning the contact in the switches. just don't loose the little springs and contacts like i did. man was my garage floor clean after that.

I pulled open the button and nothing seemed wrong with it. I wonder if the springs are worn out, because that's definitely what was causing my problems.

The problem isn't the button not working when I need it to, it's that it won't break the circuit after I release it, so I can't get spark.

word! i put dielectric grease in mine and that was a mistake because it wasn't letting the switch go back up, that was on the tether but same thing except mine wouldn't even turn over.

It was absolutely spotless on the inside. I think the problem was that it was moving around in the pod and pressing up against the backside of the red button enough to occasionally hit the contact points. I installed some plastic wedges to keep it from doing that again.
