Detonation

Didn't want to rape the post about the Riva cylinder, but I've got questions about the detonation. What exactly defines detonation? What are the causes? How do you know it's occuring without pulling the engine apart and looking inside. What are the tell tale signs of it happening once the engine is torn down? I'm sure I'll have more questions once I learn more about this issue.

You can hear it with a quiet exhaust. It sounds like excessive intake noise for around 30 seconds or so, then the engine stops with a scored piston. If you can make the buzz go away by opening the top carb screw then it was detonating. Your engine may survive and appear sand blasted at the edge of the piston and head, but you usually wont be so lucky. Almost any twostroke can be burned up by exceding the fuels limit. The major variables are combustion pressure and temperature. You have to tune your engine for the fuel it burns.

It's a lot like pre-ignition but totally different. From my understanding, detonation is when the fuel is ignited in an area other than your spark plug usually caused by too much heat which is often caused by running too lean. The fuel ignites at the wrong location and a shockwave inside the engine collides with the normal shockwave which can quickly destroy the engine in seconds if it's bad enough.

Either way, you don't want it! Since your waterbox is loud, I doubt you'd hear it in your engine but a mild deto will cause metal specks on your spark plugs kind of like tiny bits of glitter and I've never seen anything like that on your plugs.
