I have a recently purchase Pro-Tec pipe for my SJ, the guy I bought it from told me about the crack and I looked at it before I purchased it. He said (and from looking at it I figured he was right) that the crack was cosmetic and would not effect it in anyway at least he thought. I was bored yesterday and decided to pull my exhaust off and get this one ready to put on and I figured I would check it first to see if I could tell if I should have it welded. Long story short when I put my air compresser nozzle up to one of the cooling inlets and plugged the other it flowed free straight through the crack. So my question for you guys is should I try and have it welded or just get my money back? The crack is about 3" long on the mid pipe.

Yeah I just took my stock exhaust off and REALLY dont want to put that square piece of ******** on again contrary to popular belief it is not hip to be square (at least not with your exhaust). The crack also does not seem to go parralel to the material, what I mean is if you had a cross section of the pipe and where looking at the crack it would not be vertical it would have a slope to it, would they just grind a V in it and fill it with weld?

Just find a good welder and get it taken care of. My pipe has been welded and now is as good as new.

Kinda like a scar, a badge of honor from the abuse I dish out.:Banane01:

I guess I'll bring it out the specialty welding shop in town sometime this week, I only paid $100 for the pipe, hopefully welding it will be equally inexpensive.

Me too, I had that same pipe with the same crack and had it rewelded also. Try to degrease it well before you take it to them. Some welders I have delt with hate working on greasy stuff.

I was thinking about getting it all sandblasted before I bring it to them, it is an ugly blue. I havent decided if I want to paint or polish it though.

Bring the pipe to Speedwerx to have it welded, they cant be more than a couple minutes drive from you.

make sure you use a very fine media when you sand blast the pipe and try not to get too carried away.

I wouldn't charge more than an hours labor to prep and repair your pipe. It will require grinding out the crack and welding. You can grind it back down or leave the bead. Should be cheap when comparing to the cost of a new pipe.
As far as blasting it, just use glass beads. Don't use a Pangborn with steel shot!
