Couple questions on square nose SJ's...

what are things to look for when checking out old square noses?

parts of the hull that are more prone to cracking or don't do well?

any thing like that should tell me the ski was abused?

and whats the price range for these things. i was thinking any where from 800-1600 depending on how it was done with what motor.

and specifically a clean 92 with a 701 topend?

thanks. hoping to pick up a ski by this weekend.

check for cracks in the rear of the tray, sometimes under the turf and hard to see.

lift the back of the ski, it shouldnt be heavy.
most of that vintage are water logged , assuming its been in the water revently.

800-1600 seems like a decent place.

701 topend on 650 cases isnt too good though.

look inside under the handle pole for cracks, and under the nose cover. they are very prone to crack around the handle pole mount.

take a flashlight and look in the rearof the pump.

you can see the condition of the impeller, and pump.
if it looks like its chewed gravel its been beat, or served time as a loaner boat. ( ridden by newbies)

for $800, it should have some aftermarket parts, head, pipe, impeller, alumuinum pole maybe.

above all else, make sure the HIN number matches the paperwork, and its all legit, and titled or whatever your state requires.

alot of folks dont ever do the legal stuff, and that makes it hard later, and severly de-values the skis.

whats wrong with the 701 top ends on the 650 bottom end?

Nothing is wrong with it!
The 701/650 (61x) share nearly all the same bottom end components. A 701 cyl on a 650 case is fine for a little more power but will not have as much power as the 62t cased 701. A lot of guys around here are building bigger motors, and the t case will let you take it a little further. As far as I know there are no "defects" in the x cases, most people just want them for motor builds.
I have run x cases for a long time with no problems, but I bought into the propaganda when doing my most recent motor build and went with a 62t case.

As far as what to look for: From what I have seen, if it's got the stock graffix on it, and the motor is mostly stock, it porbably hasn't been abused quite as bad. People that leave them stock are not pushing their ridding, usually just recreational.
If it's got mods and/or custom paint it is more likely to have been ridden harder. This is not fact, just my experience.
Good Luck

a 650 (6m6) and 701 (61x or 62t) are not the same case. a 701 cylinder and pistons mounted to a 6m6 case will not be very good. You'll need to have at least a 61x top case half.

Also if a 701 aka 61x cylinder is mounted on 6m6 cases then the cases would have to have been machined to allow the cylinder to fit. This is alot more trouble that just bolting on a cyl. General rule of thumb on engines on the SJ is as follows.

90-93 = 650 with 6m6 cases with single 44mm carb
94-95 = 701 with 61x cases & cyl with single 44mm carb, bigger reeds
96-06 = 701 with 62t cases & 61x cyl with dual 38mm carbs, even bigger reeds
