Get rid of all your antivirus programs, except AVG.

Get the free version of AVG here, then get spybot here.

AVG and spybot should fix much of your trouble. The rest can be fixed by going into add/remove programs and uninstalling junk. Especially anything you installed from the web titled 'free <anything>'.

good luck !!!!!
also install adaware from lavasoft.
also free.
not all the spyware programs get all the issues all the time.
covering your bases with these is a start
you will need to go through prolly more than once . do it in safe mode and while not online.

and still you may have issues.

but it's a starting point.

oh and get a mac!!! sorry had to through that in there, kinda like the obligatory get a superjet statements we always hear

You get what you pay for with the free programs.

I've had the best luck with PCTools Spyware Doctor.

quite honestly they have done just as good for me as other pay versions
no spyware tool is fool proof
the only thing that is is styaing off line

Tell me that after you have removed viruses from thousands of computers.

I've removed viruses completely from atleast 5 computers using AVG.

I've seen Mcafee miss a virus that AVG didn't that same day.

That's why I recommend AVG. It'll catch what others miss.

The free version's the same as the paid version, just without support.

5 computers you say? That pretty much makes you a certified professional.

The reason software companies charge for their software is research and development.

Again, you get what you pay for.

Yes, I am a professional.

I do this for a living.

Not any complaints about virus's afterwards. Can't imagine why.

And, yes. I am certified.

hey if leo laport endorses it, ill use it. i tend to trust his judgement and advice. nothing against you.
sorry that you have not found the free versions of these programs to be that helpful ,but i have .
and as i said, " i " have not found them to work any less than pay versions.
and " none" are perfect. i don't claim to be a tech or certified but that is why i use macs now. i don't want to be .

if someone here wants to dump money on a piece of software , cool
but if they can get results for free??????
why not, especially if that free bit of code can do the job as well as a paid counter part

Wow...consescending! I have owned 3desktops and 2 notebooks. I had viruses on each one that Norton failed to eliminate. I personally went through everything one each of these systems using AntiVir and Adware, found the virus. They couldn't remove it, so I went into safe mode and deleted them there. Each time, I have repaired the computers and restored them to their previously proper running state. Does that make ME a professional?? NO. It means that not everyone is as computer illiterate as software companies would like to brainwash them into believing they are. I use AntiVir and Adaware regularly now, and haven't had any issues with my new system. I deleted Norton off all my systems after all the problems I had with the updates and bogging down of my system. Free software has improved and can be just as good as the paid versions, if not better.
So if that makes me a "professional" in your opinion, then so be it. I just understand how computers work and enjoy messing with them. In all honesty, if you lack a basic understanding in how to use certain software tools at your disposal, including "google" and the task manager to rid your computer of a virus, then maybe you need a paid program to babsit your computer. (No offense to the original poster, that is).

Tracking cookies aren't that big of a deal, but yeah on the trojans, wow.

You could always switch to Ubuntu...we did several years ago, but just last week switched back to XP due to a couple of continuing issues.

Yeah I have a firewall but I cant do much to this computer because my wife uses it alot and she is VERY computer illiterate. I know quite a bit about computers and found alot of these viruses before running avg, but most of them were unable to be deleted manually, (at least to the extent of my knowledge).

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE AVG LINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it total it found 48 trojans, 7 viruses, and 10,367 tracking cookies.

not too bad for 2 years of completely unprotected web browsing if you ask me lol.
