hey guys, a seller sent me his engine pic for his 98 SJ that hes selling..

So far, the details i know. has a factory pipe, worx ride plate and stainless steel impeller as the only mods.

he says he replace the engine with a SBT rebuilt engine 2 years ago ( hence the cleaniness) and only ridden ita few times last year due to kids... the ski is running and working.

anyways, thanks to those who commented me on the 750 sx a few weeks ago ( seller decided to keep it) and overall response here was to get a sJ anyways.. lol....

Just wanted some opinions if you guys see any thing fishy ( im new to yamis, gota seadoo) and this would be my first standup..

keep in mind, ill be doing mostly lake riding, with the occassional surf. so this doesnt need to be a freestyle ski... lol.

What does the seller want for it? Why did he replace the engine? It takes a lot to wear out a stock engine.

it's ten years old so a new motor is not a surprise. looks clean otherwise

yes and no.
I would seriously want to know what the engine was replaced as well!?

unless it got ran without oil, or sank, or had a ZILLION hours, it should not have needed an engine replacement, ive got more than a couple of boats older than 1998 with the original engines in them.

impeller and pipe are Big pluses ( you would want them later anyway)

compression check, and test ride.

look into the pump with a flashlight from UNDER the boat on a trailer, and fron the rear thru the pump exit nozzle.

those few minutes will tell you alot about how the boat has spent its life.

Check the electrical box as well, if the engine needed to be replaced there might be an underlying electrical problem (or true condition/maintenance/care)...

hey guys,

thanks for the tips.... says he got water in the engine, how, im not sure yet, ill find out tonite...and he wants 1900 or b/o for it.. i know, i almost crap my pants too. the pads are ripped but i can replace those. only has been riding on lake.

at that price, and at the price a running SJ go for (2500-3000) ,im almost positive im gonna jump on this deal, if the ski is running, and looks ok..supposly the hull is intact, no cracks or damage, just normal scratches.

IF i see anything suspicous ill hold off.

I have a SBT engine in my seadoo Rx (the famous 951's) and ive been happy with it

sounds like a great deal to me at $1900 for sure.

he has the waterline hooked up backwards to the headpipe

I believe most run it into the bottom of the pipe so it fills from the bottom up....

but mine was hooked up like that when I bought it as well. I think FP tells you to install it that way.

check the pump out as best you can, compression check and test ride if possible

if it starts and runs on the trailer, I would pay $1900 for it, dont waste time test riding.

LOL allright i got the gist !! ya i want to get first dibs on it before he postes it on craiglist or something, where he found me.. i posted a want to buy ad on there looking for a SJ or 750 Sx and he responded.

I got a compression gauge, its too cold to ride it now, so if it starts and compression looks equal ( within 5lbs correct? ) ill put a deposit and pick it up friday..

the guage check is good, but Id buy it either way, just try and get it cheaper if the numbers arent both right around 150.

honestly, if compression is blown, for that price, it worth it to buy and fix it.

I'd put a deposit down and negotiate price after you look at it.

haha...

allready told him that id puta deposit on it tonite... and pay the rest on friday when i can pick it up.( need trailer ) providing that it starts and he said it started when he took the engine pic on monday.. so it should be good... ill keep u guys posted...

U-haul if needed... cheap and temporary if you can't borrow one... 5x8 open trailer should do the trick:

use a moving blanket or old comforter under the ski, and secure it with straps.

ill take some pics and post it this weekend.

I ended up getting it for 1850. and he gave me the stock parts that he had on it allready, along with hydroturf.. ill need to replace some of the padding that has been ripped..the seller was good guy and gave me the rundown..

so first project will be replacing the turf..
mods include
fact b pipe
worx intake and ride plate
UMI spring
solas SS impeller

i dont know how much those will make a difference (this is my firsdt standup, i gotta ride a stock at somepoint to appreciate the difference)
