That is the only thing I have tried to ride thus far that I have not mastered,in my defense it was not running properly but yeah they are a total biotch to get up on!

i bet you could side mount it no problem. the pump stays low in the water. always wanted to try one. just to say i rode it once
 
side-mounting isnt an option. as soon as you gas it, the front hydrofoil comes out of the water and thats your only steering... no steering nozzle on these puppies... just a front hydrofoil that rotates left and right.

i finally figured out how to get on it. you just stand on the back of the rear hydrofoil, grab the bars and pull yourself up to a sitting position. from this point, you can balance and then start the engine. throttle away and lean far forward. its actually very easy to mount.... when there arent any waves, that is....

Yeah sideboarding is not an option. I have only ridden one once and that was more than enough, they suck! Fun to watch others ride it though. Your best bet is to jump on and get used to balancing while it's floating and get way over the bars when you go to take off.
