Case damage....Is it okay to weld?

I FINALLY got my 701 motor I bought about 3 weeks back from WMF watercraft in Delaware. I get it and I see this, the bedplate mount is ripped off. The head water out put fitting is bent (not too worried about that) and the gasket set he sent me was for a 61x not 62t. I only paid 250.00 for it but really I only wanted the cases on it, and now they are broke. I called him up and he says to go and get it welded and he will pay the bill. My question is, 1st, is it safe to weld it in that spot? Given it is a good weld job, will it be as strong as stock cases? 2nd, is it even a good idea to get it welded? To me it seems like that might be a high stress area for a freestyle ski. He said I could have my money back but I REALLY don't want to have to ship this back to him. 3rd, I believe this was damasged in shipping and the box WAS insured, should I try to get insurance money? It was packed pretty good, it was in an SBT box with their foam padding. Any advice on this?

Well, you can weld cast aluminum.

It should be alright, since the bed plates mount with more than just one bolt.

Personally, I wouldn't.

Thats exactly what I said. You could do it, but I said if I'm rebuilding this engine i'm going to do it right the 1st time.

Because of the other damage that I know broke in shipping. That side was the side that was facing up during shipping. I'm pretty sure it was shipping related.

its hard to say so people will not comment
i woudl say if you heat up the front there you will quite likely warp the front of the cases where the flywheel cover goes on and leave yourself with a constant leaking issue

Doesn't look like a fresh crack to me. If the damage happened during shipping I would think the cracked area would be cleaner. The damaged area looks to be just as dirty as the rest of the surounding area.
