Carb problem 701 SN

So I went to go out for ride (2nd time this season). Started up out of the water no problem. Launched the ski, started it and just as I was pushing off and got my knees in the tray i gave it some throttle and it instantly died. And wouldnt start after. Went back home, checked spark, compression, wasnt getting fuel. So I took the spark arrestor off. And started it while dumping some premix down the carb and it fired right up. Ran it off the premix bottle I have for a bit (not to long though) Seemed to run fine about 30 mins after without it. About an hour later I went back. Launched the ski and it ran great. Ran it for about 30-40 mins with no problems whatsoever.

So my question is what would have caused this. Maybe some stuff clogged up a jet and it passed through is what I suspect. Any other possibilities or should everything be good. Dont wanna get stranded.

Seems to be a fuel issue then. Check / replace the fuel filter. Have you rebuilt the carb? If not, who knows what’s inside and what condition the seals and diaphragms are in. There’s also a filter inside that might be clogged. If you haven’t done it, get an authentic mikuni rebuild kit. Tear it down, clean, inspect and rebuild. While you’re at it, check the jets to see if they’re close to the right size. Check the condition of the rubber tip on the needle, probably wouldn’t hurt to replace it as well.

Yeah I think I'll get a new fuel filter for it(isnt it technically a fuel water seperater?). definitely order a rebuild kit. Might not do it right away but if the problem happens again I'll definitely just rebuild it cuz I dont know when it was rebuilt last.

I’ve never messed with a stock setup but I think the water separator is on the vent side of the tank. The kits are 50 bucks on amazon with prime delivery. Since you said you don’t want to be stranded, I’d go ahead and do it. I think the biggest difference comes from the fresh diaphragms in the fuel pump. On old skis that haven’t been rebuilt in years it takes forever to suck up fuel and get a prime. After rebuilding mine with all the lines empty it is primed and fired in 5-10 seconds of cranking.

Yeah I'll get one off amazon. In canada so I have to pay about 30 bucks import fees. Anything I should be aware of or watch out for when rebuilding the carb?

It comes with a diagram of how it goes together, but there’s a few different versions of the carb that use different gaskets and seals. So you won’t use everything it comes with. Just pay attention to how it comes apart and put it back together the same way. The paper thin plastic check valves are held in with a little rubber plug. It’s supposed to use a special ball end tool for install. Just be careful installing it with something blunt, it’s easy to poke a hole through it.

Thanks for the fast replies, really appreciated. Just to make sure before it ships, the part number of the kit I ordered is *MK-BN38/44 SPR* off amazon. Just making sure I dont pull a rookie move and get the incorrect one. (And waste $90)

Yes, that one is Genuine Mikuni but it doesn't come with needles and seats and those should be replaced also.

Correct, I ordered that same one and it came in the mikuni box. Not sure why the gaskets look red in the ad.

The needle and seat are also on amazon / ebay. I’m not 100% sure but I believe 1.5 is stock and used if you keep the stock intake.
