can't figure out electrical problem?!?!?

It runs good for about 20 minutes then starts breaking up. There was water in my e-box but i got it out and cleaned everything up with electrical contact cleaner but still nothing. Tried a Jet ski solutions coil and still the same symptoms. Changed out my MSD and tried my stock CDI and still the same problem, running bad after 10-20 minutes of riding. Not positive whether the JSS coil is good because who I got it from said he wasn't positive if it was good or not, but it ran fine for a little then started messing up. The weird part is, the last time i was out with it, it was running bad but not real bad ( it gets real short bursts of clean, the way it should be, power), I stopped on the beach for 5-10 minutes then when i pulled off the beach to go load it up it was barely running on both cylinders. It's a real weird problem, maybe someone here has had similar trouble before?

after dark, remove both plugs from the engine, cover the holes with a rag.

plug both spark plugs back into the plug boots, make sure they are touching the head of the engine or some other good ground ( wrap wire around the threads and ground it if you have to)

crank it over ALOT.

is there a CONSISTANT and BLUE spark there?

if not, work your way backwards ( try new plugs first)

unscrew the plug ends, trim back 1/4" maybe more if the wire is crumbling and corroding.

if that doesnt improve it, I would look at the stator.
it could have water in there too.

I beleive there are testing methods for the stator output, both coil resistnace readings, AND test for watching the voltage come from the stator coils.

If you are running the stock Yamaha plug caps you should get about 4500 ohms measuring across the plug caps. If you have the NGK resistor caps you will read about 14500 ohms. If you get nothing then flex the wires near the caps and see if you can get a reading. If so then trim the wire back 1/4 inch or so. Sometimes they break near the coil body and they are replaceable by JSS. If the coil is breaking down internally it could cause your problems also. This is harder to test because it might read fine at rest but fail under the high voltage during operation. High voltage can be a strange customer and it hurts too..

I have had alot of problems with bad plug wires and very few actual bad coils. Secondly, the start stop switches are the next biggest problem area IMO.

in my experience, coils are pretty reliable.

IMO too..

Ya do the easy things first, like the plug wire trim back, and a continuity test on the start and stop buttons.
Then I say test the charge coil on the stator..
I have replaced these before.. easy to do with just a soldering gun, heatshrink and a little time..
Bet ya its the charge coil..

I was ready to replace try a new stator that was at the rental i work at to see if that was it. It's a relief i didn't have to buy a new stator. I used an electric impact gun this time to finish tightening the stator up, after a screwdriver at first. You can get a whole nother half turn tightening the screws with the electric gun after your done with a screwdriver. I used loctite last time, it was probably loose from a combination of my pipe rattling against the flywheel cover for a little and my motor slammed back the shortshaft from a loose motor mount. Everything is fixed, and tight now. I was out for about an hour and a half tonight and it ran strong.
