I ordered her a 29" Motobecane Fantom today. She's actually enjoying riding and the bike I built her needs new wheels, new headset, new stem, new fork, etc so instead of spending that money on a 5 year old frame I bought her a new one and we'll sell the old one to recoup some of the cost.

Darin, please tell me that she has test ridden a 29'r?

They can be kinda difficult to get up to speed. Granted, once they are going it is freight train.

Not an issue, we ride slow together anyway. I've ridden a 29" and noticed no difference.

How much did you spend?

I find myself riding my old, wobbly bike more and more often lately. I enjoy the exercise. I am looking to upgrade to something that isn't utter crap.

$600 shipped from bikesdirect.com If you want to get a decent hardtail, you can get a 700HT for $500 I think, just make sure you're getting the right size frame which can be tricky without sitting on one. They have less expensive ones also, including some 29" single speed bikes that people really like.

Her bike came in today, put it together (just a few things to do, it's 95% assembled) and it's perfect for her. I'm a little jealous actually, my next bike will be a 29er for sure.

I've taken up running instead. I don't have enough money for a decent bike right now.
Shoes are cheaper.

I am not convinced that's inevitable. Good shoes and proper training. There are plenty of old runners.

Besides, what do you think riding skis in surf (or off v-wakes) does for your knees?

I don't either. :sneaky:

I've ran before, and it was never my knees giving me problems. I always got shin splints.

She got it on a trail for the first time yesterday and it's a perfect fit and rides/shifts great. She even tried to come up a 3 log step-up after I did it for the first time ever, but her pedal hit the side and stopped her momentum. She would have made it otherwise I think.

After last weekend's surf ride, my knees have some issues. Moving into our new house for over a week didn't help.

Running is on hold, I am out looking for a hybrid bike today.
One pedal fell off my junker bike on Friday.
