Bolts?!?!?!?!?

I know I sound like an idiot, but I can't for the life of me get a wrench on the two bottom center bolts of the Riva exhaust manifold on my SJ 701. Coming from the top or the bottom, I can't seem to get a wrench on them. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Any tips or tricks?:sneaky:

i had the same problem on my protec manifold. what i devised was a crows foot, with a peice of 1/4 in square stock in the end so a wrench can get on it. its slow going but that was the only way i could get the bolts snugged up.

very bottom one: use a long extension and a 5/8" socket
center one, nearest the cylinder (slotted hole): use a stubby 5/8" open end wrench...

hope that helps

And for clairification, I'm talking about the bolts securing the manifold to the head.

It looks like I have to remove the head to get to them, but please tell me I don't.

That crow's foot looks like it might work.

I'll swing by the tool store tomorrow and get the crow's feet and give it a shot tomorrow evening.

The last thing Penguin needs is me dragging my ski over there so he can help me pull the head to get to 'em.

I don't know what size bolts you have in there but I have 13mm bolts in my Riva manifold. I took the boxed end side of a 13mm wrench and took the grinder to it, made it really thin. Fits in there and works perfect.

It's a 13mm just like yours. How thin did you have to make it?

Now if I buy a craftsman, grind it down and then it breaks, can I return it? :sneaky:

Peter, I think the bolts you are after are 12mm heads If I remember right (OEM Yam exh. manifold bolts). the best wrench to use is one from a Yam or Kawi or Sea-Doo tool kit (the crappy one that comes with a new ski). Take the 12mm open end wrench and bend it in a vice to get it angled away from the manifold. you can also grind it thinner if needed. I'm pretty sure thats what I used to bolt that up... (its my wrench for putting on Factory Pipe Manifolds... priceless)

BY ALL MEANS, DON'T TAKE OFF THE HEAD!!! You shouldnt have to do that...

I'll buy the crow's feet and two 13mm wrenches today (since the other 6 bolts were 13mm, I assume these two are) so that I can bend one and grind one.

It will be my mission tonight to get that manifold off of there.

BTW, where is the best place to buy gaskets for skis? And when I bolt it back on, I assume I should use locktite, and do I need to torgue to any specific amount or just tight and then an extra pull?

Thanks for all the help.

And I'm so glad I don't have to pull the head. Major relief.

Those two bolts might be 12mm... SERIOUSLY... I think I used the OEM Yam bolts there which have 12mm heads.

I will send you gaskets with the manifold if you send it to me to fix the threads.

I didn't have to make the boxed end side much thinner, but it fits in there fine, as long as my Riva manifold is almost the same as yours. Sorry the pics are bad but you get the idea. Be sure to grind the side that will go over the head of the bolt first.

first - I have a running ski to ride, Peter does not. I figure since it's my fault he wanted a SJ, the least I can do is help him fix it. but he has to bring it to me. I'm not going to him

second - that pile of parts is in Houston. You will be in Crystal Beach.

Third - you are welcome to raid my garage, just bring plenty of cash to pay for what you take
