Bendix Spins but Doesn't Engage 5-7 Times out of 10

1995 FX1 with stock 61x engine. Yesterday it went from maybe every 1 in 10 starts to 5 to 7 in 10 times when I hit the start button the bendix would just whiz/spin but not engage the flywheel.

Is the bendix spring broken?

I can't remember, can I get the bendix out without removing the flywheel?

Any things to look for or do before I take out the fuel tank, take the flywheel cover off and check things out?

Thanks guys and gals.

Assuming it's not anything obvious like rust or broken spring, you probably need to replace the plate that separates the weights.

What is that piece of metal poking through the flywheel hole above?
Here is a close up of it removed:

The Cold Fusion Flywheel Holder for Yamaha is simply the best designed tool out there.
The generic Ebay Flywheel Puller needs the three holes widened out to fit properly, but once done is also a great tool.

The magnet which is cracked. Can I just buy a new magnet? Or do I need to buy a new flywheel? If so any suggestions where and what to buy?

There is too much oil in the stator area. What can I use to clean it? Brake Cleaner? Carb Cleaner? CRC Electrical Contact Cleaner?

See another piece of metal on the hull in front of the stator area? It has a round center like the other piece above. It seems like it would go around the flywheel or the bendix. Where did it come from?

We have a Winner: @Storbeck

You can seen the third piece of the bendix plate inside the bendix here:

I have a spare 650 engine. Is it the same bendix as in the 701 61x?

But I am a bum because I left the flywheel cover off and it has surface rust on it.

Can I clean it up and use it use that bendix for today?

Finally I actually rebuild a Kawasaki bendix, replacing the three spinning magnets. And it worked fine.

My oem Yamaha FX-1 / Super Jet SJ700 1994-1995 Service Manual just shows the bendix as a complete component.

Where can I buy the bendix internals individually because this price seems silly:

Kawi and Yamaha bendix are interchanbeable, and also Polaris and I'm sure others. You do have to be a little careful because there are some out there that look identical but spin the other direction, I think they were from ATV's or some such.

I know you can buy the parts individually but I don't recall where, I bet Jetmaniac has them.

Getting the ring off is not much fun, try your best not to stab yourself with a screwdriver or pick. I always do.
