Boys...more noob techie questions. What's a bendix? How does it work? What makes one go bad and need replacing? How do you know if one is need of replacement or repair.

It is not part of the starter, and I haven't seen teeth break off.

It's a separate part that transfers force from the starter to the flywheel.
They can and do go bad, typically they rust and/or an internal spring breaks.

Not saying it doesn't happen, I've just never seen it.
And the typical failure mode is just a failure to engage.

Mine is corroded a bit and so doesn't extend and engage the flywheel. The starter just spins freely. I've been pulling it apart, cleaning it and greasing it up for the last 5 yrs to get by. Until it fails completely I just can't get a new one. Usually if I tap the case enough it frees up.

Never lost a riding day to it yet...

ive herd of the teeth brakeing off and thats why??

950 seadoo's were famous for this, the teeth would break off and get pulled into the flywheel cup by the magnets then chew out the stator, then blow fuses.

I have one that I got as an extra part that had a tooth broken on the starter motor side. I have no idea how that happened or why the guy saved it. I've had two go out on me and both were the spring breaking. One disintegrated so bad there were parts of it stuck to the flywheel magnets.
