Bad coil?

Went to check my the spark on my 98 SJ after hooking up my new epic. Well it had no spark. I checked the coil and I am getting 0.00. I take it this means the coil is bad?

hmmm.......0 (zero) ohms or shorted? Make sure you're using the right ohm meter range.

If it's reading "open" or infinite, check with out the spark plug booties.

Zero ohms would mean a dead short, which I think would be pretty uncommon. make sure you have your meter set to the right range if it's not auto-ranging like easyrhino said.

The standard specs are:

primary coil (orange and black wires): 0.078 - 0.106 ohms

secondary coil (plug wire to plug wire, without plug caps): 3500 - 4700 ohms

If you do need new plug wires, don't hesitate to send the coil off to Jet Ski Solutions. Cheaper than buying a new coil, and you get better wire, better harnessing and MSD ends and boots. I just sent 2 coils to him in the past month, and he did them the same day he received them. Great communication and quick shipping too.

...and I just ordered an EPIC too. Let me know how you like it and if there's any tips I should know about, once you get the coil issue sorted out!

This is good advice, always make sure your coil is in excellent condition when using aftermarket ignitions and don't crank the engine without grounding the plugs, if you do not give the high voltage a path to ground it will try to find one, this can lead to the secondary winding being damaged causing all sorts of problems.
I have never known the primary winding go down on one of these but it is possible, the reading is so low you might be reading zero if your meter is on the wrong range or not very accurate.
Although Yamaha spec the coil resistance as above it is unlikely you will get this reading through the oem wires it will likely be higher than this. If you remove the wires from the coil and measure directly across the coil then you will get the reading Yamaha spec.

You can go to NAPA or any autoparts store and buy the same Belden 7mm/8mm wire (Stranded), dig out the old wire, install the new wire and ends and be done for a fraction of the cost of JSS. It just will not be as pretty.

Ok I rechecked everything after I found out what I was doing. On the primary )orange, black wires) I am getting 0.06. But on the secondary (plug boots) I am only getting 4.2 is this a sign of bad wires?

When you get 4.2 on the secondary, are you sure your meter is not showing K ohms? i.e, 4.2K ohms = 4200 ohms which should be good. It's hard to tell you for sure, since all meters are different. If your meter is autoranging (there would only be one setting for ohms), then look to see if a little "K" symbol is showing up on the display when it says 4.2. Or, post up a pic of the meter when it's reading and we can tell you for sure. :)

Or you could buy an SXR coil and some MSD terminals. Bam.

I did it like Chris from ATP showed me. For the primary I have the meter set on 200 in the ohms section. For the secondary I have to turned over to 200k in the same section.

my guess is that when it says 4.2, it's really 4200...especially if you get an out-of-range error or something when doing that same measurement on the 200 ohm setting. You sure there isn't a little "K" symbol on the display next to the 4.2?
