So i am geting back into mt. biking after about 4 years of not riding. My old bike is a trek 8700zx carbon fiber (thinking it was a 1994) that I loved but its old and all the components are worn out. I was thinking of just updating it but then I started pricing everything out and got up to $500 so decided to get a newer used bike.

I just picke up 2003 trek fuel. I was hoping to get something newer than 7 years old but I feel like this will be a good bike for me. I also got, what i hope, was a good deal on it.

This is my first full supension bike so I hope I like it. Living in Michigan i dont think I really need it but I think i will like it for some of the trails I ride.

couple pics too. old bike and new.

mt. bike helmet?

I have never used a mt. bike helmet in the past but am going to get one before I start riding my new to me bike.
Does anyone have any info on ones they really like of dislike?? Any thing I should look for? Should I not waist my time on this form and just talk to a bike shop? Thanks Paul

I went to Dick's and just tried on a few until I found one that really felt good. Just about any of them will work since they're mainly a closed cell foam that once it takes a hard hit breaks and you have to replace it. I think mine was $30.

Biggest difference with helmets is weight and vents. The lighter the better. More vents or better air flow is a big plus.
Nothing like having a hot head.

I typically spend about 60-75.00 on a helmet.
Plus you need to replace them about every 3 years. Also dont leave them out in the sun. I am bad about leaving mine in my truck all the time, but that has been through the winter, summer months it is not good to leave them in the trucks. The heat can break down the foam. (I cannot varify this, just remember reading about it in a magazine years ago.)

It's off of the road (north shore drive) you take to get to north shore beach in gh. The trails are unmarked and hard to follow unless you know them but they wind through the primary dunes north all the up and into pj hoffmaster. The main loop is 27 miles round trip, way technical and tons of elevation change.
