B-Pipe coupler installation: Technique tip

Don't know if this has been posted. Struggled for about 45 min and 450 curse words until I did this:

WTF?!?! It won't let me upload the picture (resized to super small even).

Anyway, now that the dramatic effect is lost: loop it over the jaws of your bench vise and crank the vise open to stretch the coupler until you can get it on without too much cursing....

I just cut two semi circles out of 1 1/8" particle board the same size as the inside of the coupler. Then drove in a couple of folding wedges, which expand the coupler just enough to make fitting the pipe in a breeze. Tip leave the coupler in the sun to soften up then drive in the wedges. I leave the spacer in for a day or two before installing the coupler.
I only use this on a new coupler, I use windex any other time.

I used the old stretch it in the vise trick and windex to get my new coupler installed the last time I did it. They can be a pain :banghead:

I windexed the hell out of it before I ever even tried to get it on the first time. Then spent 30 min to get it on the B-pipe and then REALLY started cursing trying to get it on the chamber in the hull :banghead: :banghead:

The vise made it soooooooooooooooooooooooooo easy :woot:  :woot: :Banane01:

I have found it is easier to attach coupler w/ head pipe not yet bolted down. Much easier (although its never real easy) hense the multiple different methods.

Wow, I guess I havent had to put on a new coupler for a long time!

I have a 2.5 ft piece of that blue coupler material that I scored on Ebay from a racer here in town that was gettting out his Superjets and into SX-R's.. Score! :headbang:

My new one didn't look so good after a few weeks, maybe I'm running my pipe too hot to keep it pretty.

I use windex if I need it. I think part of the trick is to do it from the port side.

Here's a reply that I stated to someone who asked...
The best way to get them together in the ski is to put them together out of boat first and let sit overnight or a couple of days. Put on the blue coupler on the headpipe making sure it's pushed up tight and clamp on, then spray with windex cleaner and push in the chamber, turn chamber like it would be in the ski. let sit....Now to put in...bolt up headpipe in first, with the blue coupler still clamped on to headpipe with no clamp for the chamber side on yet, now install chamber, start by putting in stinger end first on the right side of where the steering cable is, then work the big end of chamber into the area where the pipe goes while pushing in the steering cable to clear the stinger end working it in place, make sure you have the waterbox elbow hose in and clamped to the waterbox, spray windex on both the chamber and the blue boots, turning and using a thin screwdriver to help the boot lip from folding in. Lastly undo both the big clamp and the stinger clamp and wrap around coupler boots and adjust chamber to the best fit and tighten them up. then spray everything around where the tank goes in and make it slippery and push in, tight fit but it'll go in. Make sure you have the tank straps clipped in holders and wrapped around the handpole and zip tied untill you get tank squeezed in.

I will advise caution on the dishsoap as it will not evaporate like windex does. I had a coupler slip due to dishsoap when I was riding. Something to think about!!!!

Dishsoap like pomolive does evaporate just like water and windex. Never had a problem with it. All you need is a small dab. To each his own, this is what works for me.

Now if you put it on and ride 5 minutes later ya your gonna have a problem.

I use that method also, no windex or lubricant neccesary. I have the limited chamber which wants to push the blue coupler right up against the manifold. unbolting the headpipe gives all the clearance I need to get the chamber in. A little push and twist action and its done.

Like a lot of you (judging from the replies) I hadn't put a NEW coupler on in a while. My old one would slip on and off without too much trouble.

This NEW one took me about 20 min to get it on the headpipe out of the boat on my workbench. Getting that onto the chamber in the ski (with headpipe unbolted, of course, I don't think there's any other way to do it) was NEVER EVER going to happen.

Heat is a good idea, but keep this in mind next time you get a new coupler. A dab of Windex just ain't gonna cut it (unless Paul sent me an undersized coupler......)
