Anyone know about boats? Maxum 1700 SR

I've got a little bit of money saved up. We are tired of depending on the kindness of strangers to provide a wake for us to play. So I am thinking of getting a boat. Nothing too big, Something under 20 feet actaully. I saw this on craigslist in San Antonio, it's about 350 miles from me, but it's a nice looking boat. Does anyone know if they are decent boats?

Maxium makes nice boats. And yes, something heavier and maybe with a deep V hull would be ideal. I'd assume that the 3.0L is a four cylinder which will be good on gas.

Yeah, like they say above bigger and deeper V give off more wake. Of course you could add phat sacks in the back to help out.....

Unless something hbas recently changed, maxum boats were made my bayliner, and simply had fancier stickers on them.

RUN LIKE THE WIND.

bayliner boats arent built well at all.

lift the front most seat on one, even a new one, look at teh BOW eye loop that attatches it to the trailer, they have a small washer for each bolt, and NO reinforcement in the hull in that area.

Ive seen more than one, NEW on the dealership floor like this, I even saw one back in the early late 90s that one of the bolts was mising the washer right there.

seriously, goto some boating websites, read up.

spend more money now, it will be a better overall experience for you.

Im not sure about maxum being from baliner, but I second and third to stay away from bayliner, they're pieces of crap! The hulls are so thing on a dark night you can see whenever somebody inside has a light on...

We used to call Bayliners 'Binliners'!! LOL - turd build quality!

Maxims look nice, more a water ski boat than a wake board boat - no idea if Bayliner makes them though..

stay away the boat is underpowered .the boat shoulsd have at least a 4.3 litre otherwise it is just good for cruising around . it may pull you out of the hole skiing but it is going to work really hard doing it . i have a 4.3 in a 18 foot and it is barely enough . keep in mind boat means bring on another thousand .

Virgin has a point - put a bladder tank in it for a better wake and its all over - it'll never got out of the hole.. The 4.3 Mecruiser V6 is a nice unit IMHO.. powerful enough but not 'V8 hungry'.. put a fine pitch prop on it if needed.

Maxum is a well known boat, and fairly well respected, not really tops though. I think the workman ship will show for that as well. Go take a lok at the boat, and pull of all the cushions to gain access everywhere, and check for stress cracks in the fiberglass, particularly the corners and deck joints, also look for soft spots that would indicate moisture. A good look in the bilge will show a lot as to how the boat was maintained, maintenance is key. If the boat wasnt maintained well, then it probably wont run well, or long at least before things start to fail. Check for stress cracks in the bilge area, around the out drive bracket etc. Make sure the drive looks good, and that it was maintained as well. That includes changing oil every season and proper winterizatin of the the outdrive. If the boat checks out well, then I'd say its worth whatever you want to put into it. The boat wont be too underpowered, it will pull a skier easily, and probably top out around 40-43 knots.

I just noticed the dates at the top of this post, so I'm probably behind, but just to clarify... Maxum is is a division of Brunswick Corp (yes the bowling equipment people), who essentially owns everything in the marine business; they probably own the boat launch you use too, and maybe even your favorite lake. Bayliner, Boston Whaler, Sea Ray, Trophy, etc, etc. They also own Mercury, Cummins Marine, etc. Insert punchline about evil corporate America here, but the bottom line is that they produce boats for the masses, and their main concern is stockholders, not boat buyers. If you're looking for a solid investment, buy some shares. If you're looking for a solid boat, I would look elsewhere. That's my $.02. And yes, I am a relatively dissatisfied former Sea Ray owner, and yes, I replaced the exhaust manifolds twice on the 5.7 Merc.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't buy the boat, I didn't have time to look at it, but I am still considering getting a boat (mostly so we don't have to chase down other boats to catch a wake).
