Learned a few lessons on this one... bought "newly rebuilt, never ran, buyer must break-in, like new" 61X 701 complete motor (less carb) for $630 delivered. When pulling the motor off the skid, I tipped motor on it's side and about 1/2 pint of oil ran out of the intake (all over me and my garage floor).
Brought motor to local shop, and owner and I tore motor down together (thanks Dale!) and realized:
1) One piston new, other original (used)
2) New piston missing circlip
3) Reeds rusted/corroded
4) Crank shot (rusted, one bearing practically siezed and grinding well, excessive play on one rod)
5) Crank oil seals almost shot
6) Cases had rust all over and in them, with about another 1/2 pint of oil still in it.
7) Flywheel/stator assembly rusted on about 1/3 of it (nice rust line where water obviously sat for some time).
Since there was no water in the oil that came spilling out, I can only assume the oil was to help ease the rusted crank and grinding bearing into running for a short time???
Had shop take pictures, describe condition in writing, and provide repair estimate, which exceeded price I payed.
No fear... had paypal buyer protection which should serve me well. Not. :frown:
Learned a hard lesson on bank transfer with paypal. Paypal took 45 days to review case and said I had to ship motor back at my own cost, and they would negotiate amount of refund. According to paypal, I couldn't get all my money back since I took the motor apart and seller was allowed to recover any costs associated with putting the motor back in the same condition it was shipped to me in. Not sure what that could have amounted to, and didn't want to take the chance he could convince paypal he needed new gaskets and assembly labor. By shipping the motor back, I felt I concerned I didn't have my money or the motor in hand. I guess he wouldn't trust me to put it back together... :sneaky:
Couldn't find the problem without disassembly, but disassembly meant voiding "original condition" requirement of paypal.
Concluded that if I sent the motor back, I would be out at least $200.00 (shipping back, gaskets, and labor seller will claim). So, decided to use some nice people on this board to get the parts I needed and put it back together myself, and know it is right. The cost of not having the motor for 33% of Michigan's 3 month summer was worse.
Lesson learned:
1) For all future transactions involving paypal, I will only use credit card. Gives buyer upper hand.
2) Better to pay motor parts and assemble, then to buy someone elses work (unless they are a known professional, or common/supported on this board)
