I picked up a 86 X2 from one of my customers for my son to learn to ride & I could have a little fun also,I could use some advice from the X2 junkies.:hail:

I bought it with 650 motor with Butchs exhaust (looks like a Westcoast),40mm Keihin carb,UMI steering,DG ride plate, westcoast 2 bar intake grate,Solas 15 ss impeller.

Heres where I need some help, when I ride it it runs good but def lacks punch,it just kinna pulls real steady put no braaaap. It also slides out real easy in the turns, right hand turns..turns great, left hand turns it just slides out.

I have a 44 intake coming so I can use a 44 Mikuni instead of the 40 Keihin was also going to install Boyseen reeds, any other suggestions to help the motor a little.

I am looking for a toplader intake grate to help with hookup,I am not real thrilled with the DG rideplate,is there a better one,any suggestions would help. Thanx Dan

my UMI is like that too, I've tried adjusting the steering nozzle cable on both ends to no avail, so I'm going to take the steering head apart and trim back the left hand steering stop....

Well if you really want some punch put a 750 motor in it.. just use the 650 exhaust mani and exhaust and it bolts right up... but you gotta figure out where to put the electronics..

You don't really need the toploader, the problem is impeller design. Swirl's with a 2 bar great work fine, and don't act like a brake. The brap is lack of motor.

I have never ridden a 650 that had much braap. When I rode one in my X2 I had to have it pinned all the time to keep my speed up. I still had fun though. Increase the leverage of the steering to get the nozzle going left to right as much as possible. Mine is at max swing without cutting it. If you put tubbies on it you will make it handle more normally. It will carve way more predictably. Their added width lifts the nose and sinks the tail when up on edge keeping the pump in the water way better. I don't really like to hook the tail up more with fancy rideplates, I prefer to make the nose pull its way through the turn and help it with more nozzle angle. I have always run a toploader in the ocean so I don't know what they are like without them.

Thanx Pete,My son saw you at NC & is still talking about the dragger guy with the X2.

I didnt know if I was expecting too much from the 650 or it was just slow by nature, when we run bouys I jump on the X2 & it def gives me a workout but def lacks some punch.

I pulled the topend off to day & it is in perfect condition with oem pistons,so I am going to add reeds & the 44 mikuni & try to tune it the best I can & look for a 750 donor.

It has a straight 15 pitch impeller, any variable pitch you would recommend & what pitch ??

if you don't want to spen the money on a 750 motor you can go with a high compression head. i had a 650 w/ high comp. head, 44mm carb, kerker pipe, wet wolf cone, 15.5 prop. and it ripped great out of the hole. i now have a 750 with a bunch of goodies and to be honest i noticed more low end from the modded 650.

to help handling try a set of tubbies. after riding legdrags ski i'm sold on them.
also try cutting a "D" out of the rideplate. it will help with the handling as well.

there were 2 dif systems of UMI's one for the squrelcage and one for the cable type. if the wrong one is in there it's impossable to adjust it stright.

The angle grinder will fix anything...

I fixed it. The bars aren't 100% straight when making a straffing run, but at least I can turn left now...

The steering arm had been ground down by whoever I got it off of.

???????????????????

You sure about that? I'd like to see proof. If so, that would explain why my steering is goofed up.

dan, the 44 mik will help. ( i hate kehins). i think i should have some jetting notes.

the butches pipe, is "ok". it is made by westcoast. the coffmans, or factory pipe is better hp, but will cost you $$$.

check your squish. you should be able to take off about .020 on the stock head safely. .010 will equal aprox 10lbs on the guage. stick with premium gas. 175lbs is a good number.

a 9-17 straight blade scat is a great prop for the X-2, and 650SX.

i have hear alot of guys that have pulled out the hull inserts when running a top loader on the X-2, or SX. you may want to redo them first, so you don't loose an expensive scoop.

as far as old school ride plates, i have always liked the ocean pro's with fins. they hook awesome. unless you like to slide around. ( some people do).

these are all just my opinon, please take it as such.

fletch... one system uses the upper stem/bar clamps piece for the steering stop, the other one uses the steering arm and bearing holder piece for the steering stop (kinda like the stock)

That 15 pitch should be pretty good for that 650 motor if you want it to get going a little better. The pump/prop is usually the weak link on an X2. I don't think they were the best when they were new and after 10 years they aren't any better. If it feels like it is spinning it might be worth having the prop dialed in by impros to original dimensions. If you want a new wear ring installed I know a guy in Jersey that will prob do it for a good price. I know he does all his own stuff but not sure how much outside work he does.

Thanx Pete:biggthumpup: I have a Solas 15 in it right now,it dosent slip at all just has no BRAAAAAP.:frown: I have a shop in Fla but havent messed with the 650s in 15 years or more & its you X2 freaks that got me going on getting one for my son to learn to ride & dad can have some fun as well.:Banane01:

I have a 44 manifold on the way so I can ditch that POS Keihin (I hate Keihins also Zig). I am also goning to see about getting a FPP pipe for it like Zig said, the Butchs/Westcoast dosent imprees me at all.

Thanx for all the suggestions, keep them coming.

All 3 of my X2's hook up better to the right than they do to the left. I think (don't know for sure) it has something to do with the thrust or rotation of the thrust from the pump. Either way it definetly slides more in left turns. I get mine to hook up a lot better in left turns by shifting my left foot back further in the tray and shifting my weight back more to the back of the ski. My right turns I'm throwing my weight more into the handlebars
