87 650sx budget build

Okay i bought a 650sx and i dont care how big of a turd it is it was cheap for the money and will do until i can get an SJ or sxr. so far im going to try my hand at repairing some of these little knicks it has on the hood and also im going to mod the hood as well and get rid of those little wierd pleater peices. okay so here is what is wrong with the hood it has a little crack on the vents and what looks like a "ding" on the top part. how do you guys reccomend i fill these in? pure resin? or some fiber glass and resin? i was thinking of getting the stuff from walmart or autozone. would that be okay? well here are the pics of the two dings

and im thinking of forming waht went there in glass and cutting the hood so it can suck air from back there instead of the scoops. waht do you guys think??

as i progress i will be posting more and more pics of waht im doing to the ski. hopefully have it painted black and white with appliance epoxy soon. thanks!

pwctoday has some nice build ups of 650sx's and pretty good amount of info regarding them. you wont find much here since SJ's are more popular and overall better machine. there is this one 650sx free-ride build...its awesome. he put foot holds and everything on that thing it looks pimp! i'm gonna keep this and get an sj if the opportunity arises. and yeah if you find any info let me know....i think i might just put resin on it and smooth it out. i think its all fiberglass and not smc like the newer 750's and sj's

okay well i took out the motor and cleaned the motor bay really good to get some of that crud off and i found out i have a westcoast waterbox lol. they any good? also i began sanding the bottom of the hull and sides to get rid of the cheap blue paint and i realized that i need to fill some low spots along with fixing the nose on the ski that way i can have a some what level bottom hull. so i was thinking of laying some 17oz biax on a certain part of the hull (from that intake grate forward about 11 inches wide). should one layer be okay?? how should i go about doing this repair? alos for the nose reconstruction i was thinking of making a stainless steel brace that i would glass over to add support and act like a "Form" to follow and get some waht simaliar lines. what do you guys think?? ima turf over the rails after too or how should i go about the nose?? could i just hack the messed up part off and leave it like that with the stainless brace?? opinions would be greatly appreciated. here are some pics of the nose damage.

okay i've done a bunch of stuff to it since this last post and got some more pictures....in short i got some rusted out motor mount bolts out and i cleaned the bilge....painted the bottom and now need to paint the top. i got the pump all cleaned up and siliconed back in after i put a new steering cable in it along with motor mounts and repainted bed plate. so far all i need to do is get my pipe in there and connect the elec. box back up to the handle bar control's and get me a battery and carb rebuild. i cant wait!! im going to throw the 44bn on it just to turn it on and make sure eveything is good....pics up in a couple of days...lol

man forgot about this thread. well update i rode the ski a couple of times before i had a little problem. didnt get to stand up on it but im getting the hang of it and hopefully will get up once i fix it.

the problem: the last person who rebuilt the motor put in a thick HG causing the hig comp head to act like a stock comp one. but before that i popped the head off thinking i had a blown HG. well i kinda did but it was due to some one messing up a hole were one of the headstuds goes. so they heli coiled it in and did a FUBAR job causing my HG leak. so now i need some reccomendations on how to,or what, i should to fix it. i also have to get some broken bolts off of the exhaust mani since they are seized in there. for those i was thinking of just putting studs. would that be a bad idea??

here is a pic of the damage....

thanks for the help

Man life sure gets in the way haha. Ski is apart for pre season reconditioning. Now with a real job I can afford to mod this thing and finish it up right. Got some studs repaired over at dasa. Got new exhaust mani and a top end gasket kit. Also popped the ebox open and man what a rats nest of wires and a fubar job of wiring. Going to fix that up nice and proper get some stuff powder coated and change out the pump oil. What oil do you guys reccomend? Other then that just ride it this season and get a hang of it. I got my supplies from us composite...poopload of 1708 biax and mat will probably be widening the tray and doing foot holds. Dont care if its not an sj im going to have fun with this turd!! Will pribably swap in a 701 as well maybe a 750. Whitca is my inspiration haha.

Its been years since i have messed with a 650sx, but i thought they had grease in the pump, I believe seadoo is the only one that uses oil on most of there ski's. IMO i wouldn't waste the money on a motor swap, you can get a decent amount of power out of that 650 for what it is, save your money from the motor swap and buy a SN, you will thank me later. I started out on a 650sx, great ski's until you ride a SJ and realize what you have been missing out on.

Would be nice to have both. For now all i got is the 650sx and will thrash on that for a while. See if the wife agrees with a ski upgrade later lol. Cool im going to check if its grease that would be awesome haha.

Hey im going turf my ski but wanted to see what underpadding you guys are using? I want something some what cushy but not that soft since I wont be doing flips anytime soon with this thing lol

9mm or 25mm Plush Padding is what I've used. 25mm is nice even if your not flipping. And It's amazing you still have this ski. I posted 4 years ago, and since then have gone through the following skis

650sx (When I posted), 701 SN SJ, 701 SN SJ, 701 Topdeck Conversion, and now at a 98 w/ 791. And a stock 07 RN as a back up.

I heard about that yoga mat aswell which one do you guys use for that? Yeah I know i actually put this sport on the ba k burner since then. Its been chillen in the shed covered up waiting for some love. I plan to keep it for the wife but will either upgrade to an rn if I see I need a better platform or maybe an A/M hull. Trust me I know since ive come back on the boards a lot of people have gotten new skis or even become pro riders haha. Slow and steady for me right now and cheaply since a house is on my list to buy.

Okay got the sucker together and getting ready for a paint job buttttttt the bn46 thats on there is complete crap and garbage. Looking for a new sbn 44 but so many different part numbers and im not sure which will work...also anyone know a good place to start jetting? Looking to keep it under 170 since im seeing a bunch for like 150-200 but 200 is my absolute max, have put too much time in this rebuild to just have a poopty carb blow it up.

You should be able to get a new sbn 44 for $200. Used SBN for under $100. I have about 6 used sbn 44's sitting in a box in the shop.

Any SBN should work fine for that 650. They made a view variations: O-ring vs paper gaskets, 3 hole pilot circuit vs 4 hole pilot circuit, different types of throttle linkages.

Which is the one I should get? I wanted to get a good one I can later use on another ski. It would be awesome to get the paper gasket one with 4 holes and a proper throttle linkage lol. Are you selling some?

I have heard 4 hole is better. I prefer the newer style o-ring carbs, but nothing wrong the with the paper style. Ya, i can sale you a carb. Ill see if i have a 4 hole, paper.
