650sx ignition timing???

Ski cut off a few weeks back, here's what's going on:

-Good compression at 150psi per cylinder
-tried 3 different cdi's, no go
-ordered/installed a new stator, ended up being a 4 wire instead of a 5 wire, wired it in correctly (purple to blk/red), stator is set to factory marks
-installed a known good flywheel

Spark is strong after this, but still won't run. Hit the primer a few times and seemed like the engine wanted to kick backwards?? Seemed like pre ignition. I removed the flywheel and found that the key sheared. Cleaned it up, installed a new key and it again it was cranking and it kicked back and completely stopped the starter like it was firing way out of time. I removed the flywheel again but this time the key was intact, but looked like it was about to go. I just don't understand why it's doing this. Has anyone ever seen this?

i worked on ski that was backfiring and not starting after the kid installed a eBay stator. It was 701.

What I did was find TDC on #1 cyl, index Mark flywheel and crank case with a marker. Remove spark plugs and ground them with wires attached. Put a timing light on #1 wire and crank the engine and view the starting ignition timing. It had more than 60 degrees Of cranking timing. The stator he just installed was causing it...

This photos shows about 12 degrees of cranking timing on yours

That's really good information! Makes sense to me. The stator could be the cause of my issue. It looks identical to the original minus the one less wire that would usually connect to the rectifier. What's your experience with the cdi timing "advance mode"? I'm being told on pwc today that the cdi could also cause this issue? Maybe it's a combination of the two? What are your thoughts?
