300/440/550 550 sx rebuild advice

I am looking for some advice on what to do with my motor. It locked up so i tore it apart to find one rod seized on the crank and damage to the top of that piston and side of the head. I can also feel wear on the walls of that cylinder. i dont want to go crazy with the build but i want to do it right so i dont need to do this again for awhile. I was thinking get the sbt crank but not sure where to bring my cylinders since i live in MN and the stand up scene isn't very happening. i would kind of like to send them so someone who knows what they are doing maybe get a little port work. if anyone can help me out with any parts I need a head and stock exhaust manifold since mine is cracked. not even sure if im being cost effective going this route but id appreciate any opinions about what i should do.

which exhaust are you wanting,... I have a few differant ones, and I should have a couple of heads lying around,... I will have to look and see. Just let me know what you need.

Is this a Reed engine or piston port. If it's the Reed its worth keeping in my opinion. I have a Reed in my 92 and it runs fantastic

it is a reed motor and i have a coffman half pipe so i think i need a stock exhaust manifold but not sure. i will rebuild it my main concern is cylinder work i will just get it done locally if i dont have any other options but like i said id like to send it to someone who knows what they are doing for port work since its apart now.

Any machine shop can bore those cylinders and resurface the head. I had mine done a few years ago to the tune of 150 bucks! Then after the rebuild kit I was close to 300 bucks. If I were to do it again I may have just bought a used running engine. I see em every once in a while for 200$ or so

Are the reed motors common and cheap enough to make it not worth rebuilding. I was under the impression that anyone with a reed motor keeps it because of the rarity and or power in comparison to the pp motor.

i just realized sbt does not list a crank for a 91 sx but ive read about people using the 440 crank because its stronger. what parts are interchangable from the reed and pp motors. i read the head bolt patterns are different but what about the exhaust manifold and crank which i need.

reed motor comes in 1991-1995. the 750 came out in 92 so not that many 550s were sold in 92 or after, which makes the reed motors rare. all 440/550 cranks are interchangeable, but thats about it from the reed to PP motors. cases are different due to stud spacing as is the cylinder and head. the exhaust is the same from 1986 thru 1995 except the color.

So I can use the exhaust manifold and crank from any 550 but nothing else essentially thanks for the info btw I haven't been getting much feedback
