300/440/550 550 Impeller Removal Question

Location

I'm looking to swap out the stock impeller for a SS one my 86 550. Both the stock and aftermarket impeller have the large hex head on them. Do I still need the impeller removal tool with this type of impeller? I haven't pulled my pump apart and figured I'd ask before I tried, other wise I'll just run the stock one in for this weekend.

thanks

Yes I believe You need a prop tool which actually holds the pump shaft on that pump, so you can hold that tool on a vice while you use a wrench to spin off the old prop and install the new prop.
Don't forget your antifreeze when reinstalling.

Its not too bad of a job. As long as you have a vice thats securely mounted. Start by removing the ridplate an intake grate, hoses, steering cable, an last the pump bolts . You should be able to slide the pump asembly off the splines of the driveshaft. Remove the 4 reducion nozzle bolts from the pump an three holding on the pump cone. Under there is the shaft with 2 flatspots, put ome rags on the vise an tighten it on the flat surface. From there just get a bick wrench or socket. Install the new one an put it all back together. Check your clearance with the new impeller an wear ring, shim it if necessary.
