550 Flatdeck build, Now with 701 Power

Here's my first shot at a ski build up. I decided what better way to learn to fiberglass then to cut a ski up!! Especially a 550 (what do I have to lose?). After seeing a few flatdeck's builds on the X, I pulled out the sawzall and cut away.

All the wet foam removed

Added a Home depot one way valve. I hope this works!

Refoamed and deciding where to put the foot straps..

And now for my first time fiber glassing. I did 3 layers of 17 oz cloth from US Composites.

I also glassed in plates for the foot straps

If i ever get a free or very cheap 550 hull i lpan on doing the same. But for now my 550 is my only ski.
My idea was flat deck + sponsons + d cut plate + CATS

brave man chopping glass in shorts and no shirt... how bad did you itch later?? hahah i'm diggin the build though, I got a lil red 550 sitting collecting dust that one day will get some sawzall love aswell, but i got to get the rest of the ski's together first!!!!

I was really surprised that I didn't itch after cutting it up. Fiberglass was flying everywhere though.

I cant wait to try this thing out. There will be twice a s much room then the original narrow tray.

Filling in some of the scratches on the bottom and adding some reinforcement to the flimsy feeling bond line and nose.

you should throw some tubbies on that thing while your messin with it.
funny, theres an indian (7-11 indian, not casino indian)family that lives near me and there is a flatdeck 550 hull in their yard. it looks like its been there a while so im assuming it came with the place.

thats great the way you distinguished between the two indians.

i didnt know they owned all the 7-11's on the other side of the country too.

I'd love to throw some tubbies on it, but I'd rather not spend a ton of $$ on it right now. Maybe in the future....

I also cut the rear corners and lip off the back. Might be hard to see, I didn't really take any pictures of just that.

Got it all sanded down, and in the makeshift paint booth for primer. Then wet sanded it. Getting close to painting, if this weather here in the great state of Michigan would ever warm up!!

I'm also looking for a SS impeller for it. Probably lower pitch more towards freestlye. The enginbe has a PJS ex. mani, Westcoast pipe, Dickensen Design intake and spacer plate, SBN 44 carb, and Ocean Pro flame arrestor. Any suggestions on impeller pitch?

I still think the flat deck think is awesome but I'm not willing to start chopping yet.

ya sweet build i know exactly what yours goin through. same sawzall show and everything haha. here is a pic of my build. its on hold due to buying a SN hull. i also made up a custom aluminum handle pole and am doin dual nose exhuast. but keep it up your on the home stretch!

looks nice. Any before/after hull weight?

I don't have the before weight. I will post up the after weight once I get a chance to weigh it. It's light enough to pick up and carry or flip it over on the stand with out problem.

That is one 550 I would actually want to ride! Now to get a 800 motor in there...

My biggest complaint is how narrow the tray is.

I think I may have to do this with my spare 550 hull!!! Maybe cut apart the 650 hull and do a conversion too...
