300/440/550 300sx sprag clutch question?

Does anyone know how the sprag clutch on the starter for the 300sx is supposed to work? The motor is out on the bench. When I spin the crank by hand by the coupler, it turns the starter with it in both directions and is very hard to turn. Pulling the starter off, the motor spins silent and free. How do I know if the sprag clutch is working or not....? Should it be free in one direction and spin the starter in the other? THANKS!

FYI also looking for a kerker pipe for this little motor - if you have one let me know :)

Oh and please save all negative comments on 300's, I already know.... OK? Thanks :)

Its a one way clutch like used on motorcycles, it should spin freely one way and not spin the other way.

The 300sx does not use the same starter system that you're used to with the 650/750 and most other motors. It has the starter output at the coupler end of the motor and uses a one way clutch. Its unique, I don't know of any other motor that uses the same system. FYI, it's also in an oil bath so it's truly different.
