300/440/550 1987 550 carb swap?

I have a mint 1987 550 with the stock 44 carb on it. I am going to dig her out after sitting for 2 years. I was wondering what carb you guys replace these stock carbs with? I have read you go to the new style mikuni? Also do I need a new intake manifold?

you don't need a new manifold to put a new 44sbn carb on it. but you do need the adapter plate that goes between the intake and the block. northwet sells them.
