300/440/550 1985 550js let me know / help please

Ok so a friend and I stumbled across a 1985 550js and a 1989 650 x2 for real cheap. And we picked up the 500js today and will be picking up the x2 on Monday. But the 550js has allot of work done to it and would like some help on the parts value. When I say allot of work it’s not a lie. From reading the forums I see allot of people doing what this 550 all ready has don’t to it. Please help us on the parts value and let us know what you think.

i have the tank out and the front case off for cleaning

Dose any one know the warranty on the Aqua Torque Starter the ski came with one but the armiture is just spinning on the shaft and wont activate the bendix.

So far the list is……note this list might grow tomorrow when we spend some more time on it ….

Mariner water box
Pipe and many / don’t know what kind
Aqua torque starter
K@N air filter
Acerbis splash shield
Wico pistons / don’t know if its bored
Double handle pole spring
4deg handle bars
Thumb throttle
Purple Hydro-Turf
Quadra-Fin ride plate / don’t know how long
Intake grate / don’t know what kind
S/S impeller / don’t know pitch no markings on it
Bilge pump with billet outlet

U parting out the ski?

Why would you care how much the junk in the ski is worth if you're not selling it? As long as the ski runs good for you, who cares how much it's worth.

Does it run?

U can probably get more then $400 worth of stuff out of that if you part out. The rust on the flywheel like that scares me.

we dont know yet . we bought knowing it needed a starter.there was a issue with the auqua torque starter so i pulled the front case off and thats what we found. for some reason the auqua toqrque starter is shot ( the armiture is juts spining on the starter shaft an we dont know why ) so we are going to replace it with a OEM starter. you are the second person to say that the rust on the fly wheel scares you . if it dont run when we get the new starter we will part it out .

U tested to see if it's seized? U should be able to turn the PTO by hand with the plugs out.
If it's not seized, there's a real possibility it'll run.

Have you tried spraying wd-40 on the starter to free the bendix (I think it's called a bendix). I'm pretty sure it's only centrifugal force that causes it to engage.

That flywheel looks UGLY!!! Can you pull it and look at the stator? The engine might be salvageable.

yea i pulled the plugs and the motor spun freely.

i pulled the starter all apart the bendix works just fine. we found out the starter shaft going through the armiture has broke away. so the starter will spin but wont activate the bendix.

i was told it would be a good idea to pull the flywheel to take a look at the stator. when we get the new starter and it dont start thats where im going to start. im gessing that there was water in there when they siliconed the drain plug closed.

Water gets in there when the engine compartment's flooded as well. When you drown that ski, you gotta pull the flywheel cover.

Chances are good that the water under the flywheel cover got into the starter ruining it. I'd wager the last thing this ski saw before going into storage was a few feet of water above the engine.

I'd recommend pulling the flywheel and inspecting the stator before you try starting it, assuming you have the tools to pull the flywheel. I don't know what a short across 1 or both of the stator coils would do to the electronics, and I'd rather not find out.

well sir you have a good point . i will do this tomorrow when i go to work on the ski again . you are the second person to tell me this so i will be shure to do it before i even start it. for some reason the plug on the flywheel cover has been filled with silicone.

thank you for the help
