I run an xir exhaust with no waterbox, no problems. It is also NOT abnoxiously loud. I don't think it adds any performance, but the way the xir pipe is, there is no way to plumb it into the waterbox. I bought an inline silencer to add, but after running, I decided it does not need it.
I have been told it is a Fischer half pipe. I checked and it is an OEM head and mid pipe.
Why would it be loud? My SX has an exhaust from an XiR which wraps around the frontof the engine, bypassing the waterbox. I bought an inline silencer for it, but never installed it because it is not...

It fits an sx exhaust manifold, points to the rear, you have to remove the waterbox, and the side exit lines up with the rubber hose that went into the waterbox (that crosses behind the ebox)
I run a teal big pin head on my 750sx. I don't know what it has at sea level, but it brings it up to 150 at 5000 ft. They are plentiful and cheap. You can also have your stock head milled cheap.
