It probably hit a sandbar at some point. the thin cast aluminum doesn't have much flex before it cracks. They can be welded though.

Just cut the wires to the sensor, heat shrink/tape the ends separately and you'll be good if it truly is the sensor malfunctioning.

I’ve had water saturated grease on top of the temp sensor , under the rubber boot where the 2 little pieces of heat shrink are, trigger...

I did the same thing with Tomac and got burned again! But happy that he's back near the front.
