To add: the upper case on Krash KV997 engines are water cooled. I don't know about the newer engines they have, but I'm sure it's the same. When I owned one, it blew a base gasket over the first winter because this was not a known thing yet.

Yes, I have a bolt in notch which is also welded. For the first few years I definitely questioned it with a loaded enclosed 4 place snowmobile trailer heading 5 hours north. But over 13 years of doing stuff like that, I've gained the confidence.
Are you positive the seal is not backwards? I've done that before. I had it flipped and it was sandwiching between the pump shoe and pump instead of fitting around on the outside of the pump.
No one really answered your original question yet, which is: yes you can smell it while you're riding. You'll be going around a lake or wherever circling back to where you just were. Good smell.

I don't think the reeds are expected to be completely air tight. When I pressure tested, the kit that I borrowed had a block off plate for the entire intake manifold.
