Foothold placement help!

I am getting ready to install footholds in my sj. I am short (5'5") and ride with a -3" pole and -1" turnplate. I love the way the ski rides, jumps, and handles, but feel uncomfortable with my feet all the way at the back.

Most footholds I have seen are at the back. How far forward can you place them without issues? Does anyone ride with them forward?

What models are best?

I'm 6' 220 and I put my WD footholds about 6 or 7" from the back. It's further forward than I've ever seen them on any other ski, but it is PERFECT for me. My exhaust is very different from stock so I didn't have to worry about exhaust tube clearance issues. Next ski I build will have the footholds in the exact same spot, but maybe opened up a little more around the ankles. I'm running a -6.5" overall Xmetal setup plus my pole mount area is slightly lower and forward from stock.

5-5 also..and I put mine as far up as they would go, limited by the exhaust.
Feels perfect for me (I still suck at freestyle tho!)

(this is on my fx1 so measurements wont do you any good)

a few things first...

where you ride (salt, fresh)?
what you plan on accomplishing (rolls, just straigt wake jumps???)
do you ride w/ one foor forward at all (surf stance)?

Don't want to speak for him, but we both ride fresh (rivers and lakes) and surf.
The foot holds are mainly to help with nose stabs and barrel rolls. He just got nose stabs in the surf down this weekend, but went over his bars a few time since he doesn't have footholds.
Don't know about his stance.

Just get Dakine foot straps and put them where ever you think they are most comfortable. You can change them around if needed quite easily. Save yourself tons of cash, time and headache. :thinkerg:

Phil, did you get a chance to try out anyone's ski with footwells when you were down two weeks ago? If not, try some out at wavedaze. I think I'd be banging the poop outta my knees if I went much further forward than the "standard" on a -3.5 setup. If you come down to do yours, we can test them out in a couple positions before committing. You'll need to notch the tip of your right footwell to account for the exhaust tube and it won't affect where you'll place your feet.

I've done a couple including turf for $600 +/- depending on options. I'd like to think my time is worth $850 but you're starting to get cost prohibitive there...

As mindless said, I ride flat and surf, and waves where I can find them (river, ocean, lake, etc..........)

I really want to learn to do some sick :crazy:barrel roles and nose stabs (like beachjunkey!:fing02:)

I know where the holds will be most comfortable-the stock mat is indented where I apply pressure with my feet, as I put them there all the time. I could use this as a template, but didn't know if there was a performance advantage to having them that far back. I know riding that far back is not "normal" feeling to me, and I LOVE the way the ski handles with the shortened pole.

Only Torr's ski, and they felt way too far back for me..............
I've never seen them forward, so thought I'd ask on here..........at least I'm not the only one that seems to like them forward! I'd love to get some help from you if you can find the time!

But it is all what you get used to. I am 5'7" and I have my REV's all the way back with a -4 inch pole and -2.5 inch steering. It seemed weird at first but after a few rides everything felt fine. I ride with both feet in the holds 99% of the time. It is all what you get used to. And the more comfortable you feel on a ski the better you will be at tricks so I would put them right where you stand now.
